Default Missing the locating dowls, for the head. what can I do?

I cannot find the locating dowls for my heads that fit into the block. I thought I had put them in my parts bucket but they may have fallen out at the machine shop. I can check with the shop tomorrow but was wanting to install the heads today. Anything I can do??????

Thanks
Wade

what a small world. I had this exact problem this week. The machine shop destroyed them when decking the block. Local auto shops were no help and I had just placed my order with Summit and didn't want to pay another 10 in shipping, even if they had them. I went to Ace Hardware and they had brass bushings that were the same dia (5/8"). They cost $2 and were long enough to cut in half to make two dowels.

Good luck.

Check with local parts stores and hardware stores. You can usually find something that will work as an alignment dowel.

A couple of long studs on each end and slip the heads over them.

Yep!

Slip the gasket over first. Set the heads on and put a few head bolts in and remove the temporary studs. Similar to building a race engine that is completely studded.

I'd use some sort of dowel. Without them the head can get in different spots and cause some issues with valve clearance around the edges of the pockets. Moroso makes offest dowels to allow you to scoot heads .030-.050" to get valves further from cylinder wall for flow....but on mine I couldn't use them without doing some more piston machining.

We are going to check PV clearance before buttoning it all up right??? Do it after you degree the cam.
