Default Which C3s had smog pumps?

I'm a C2 guy but am considering the purchase of a C3. Did all C3s originally have smog pumps or were they just installed on certain engines? Thanks. Jim

Some of the early C3's with base engines...and NOT bought in California...did not have smog pumps. You'll have to do research on specific years/engines to know which did and which did not. '71 base 350 did not require one.

What about 1969 L-68 427-400hp California cars? Did all California cars have smog equipment?

I have a '69 L71 427/435 that has a smog pump. The car was originally sold in Missouri.

As far as I know, most, if not all, C3's had them, including LT-1 engine, big blocks, etc. I also have read that some L88's had them. Many have had them removed by now by previous owners.

Once catalytic converters were installed, air pumps weren't needed. Not sure when cat's were installed in C3's....'74 or '75, I think.

Converters first appeared in 1975 model year. Smog pumps continued until at least 1978, probably further.

Default Lots and lots of Pumps

'68 and on had pumps, other than maybe L88's. Most were useless and most were removed.

Interesting topic. I wonder why I see so many ram horn manifolds around without the AIR tube holes vs. ones that have the smog provision?

Because they were plentiful and people replaced their smog versions for earlier non-smog ones.

I would check casting numbers a dates before I presumed they were original to the car. Even then they could have come from a different car.

According to the NCRS Technical manual.

"Those cars equipped with AIR systems included ALL LT-1's,1971 LS6 (454/425hp) engines, all 1972 454 engines, 1972 base engines (200 HP), and all corvettes delivered for sale in California." Hope this helps

I won the lottery on my 79 L48 - had both smog pump AND single cat. I fixed that though .

When I first bought it, one ram horm exhaust manifold also had a quarter size hole in it under the heat shield. When I mentioned to the seller the loud noise in the engine area was an exhaust leak - they said "nah, thats how corvettes are supposed to sound"
