Default header alternator bracket question

I just installed a set of hooker comp headers on my 71 small block. How am I supposed to install their 2 piece alternator bracket? I must be doing something wrong because the alternator won't even fit between the upper and lower brackets. Pictures would really help. Thanks a lot.

I have a '72 so I'm not sure if the alternator is in the same location for your '71 but I don't think that it would have changed. I didn't need any special bracket. Just used the stock bracket and I also had installed Edelbrock heads. The bracket mounts in three places - 2 on the front of the head and 1 to a water pump bolt.

There were no clearance issues with the Hooker headers. Now the A/C compressor is another story! Here are some pics that might help. Good luck!

Thanks for the help. Maybe I need to buy the factory bracket like yours. My car didn't have that, it just had 1 bolt going through the bottom hole of the alternator into the exhaust manifold. If my car had this bracket, it was lost sometime in the past 37 years.

Here's mine. I have a set of older Hedman headers.

Do you have a p/n for that? That looks nice but the closest I can find costs more and claims that it will interfere with the power steering pump.

you can alwyas get the alternator bracket from a 80. Its a one piece cast bracket and the curved front arm, bolts right up to aftermarket heads. Im using it with hooker sidepipe headers with and tall valve covers with no problem. I bought the two aftermarket pieces also, didnt need them. I can post a pic if you would like to see it tonight.

I appreciate the help. Just last night, I bought the factory 72-78 cast iron bracket that bolts to the head.
