Default Question on luggage rack installation for 1974.

I recently bought a 6 hole luggage rack for my 74 off of eBay and it is in route to me. The holes were already drilled, I guess from the factory, when I bought the car but the luggage rack was not on the car when I got it.

Question;
How do you install the dadgum thing? I can see two holes that I can reach. I know it sits over the fuel tank so I am curious as to how you bolt if from the inside? What is the secret O Great C3 gurus? :) I am ordering a luggage rack installation kit from Eckler's so I will have the screws etc. but wanted a heads up from you all first in case I need anything else.

Rack mounts with the screws in the installation kit you will need. Screws go through the rack, through the posts, and into the fittings on the rear panel. You should be able to see and reach all six mounting points. Racks were dealer installed options. Nothing mounts from underneath.

The little rubber nut that goes into the hole in the deck is called a well nut.

Texxas,

The rack mounts entirely from the outside of the car, no need to get under or in. The mounting kit comes with rubber "well nuts" they are like wall mounts that you would for hanging a heavy picture. The well nuts just pops into the hole and will tighten as you tighten the screw. Carefull as you tighten, do not overtighten for risk of cracking fibreglass. Real easy to do.

I put an 8 hole on my 72 because I use it. To add to the strength I drilled a 4" wide strip of aluminum for the forward hole pattern and was able to use that underneath from the compartment as a large washer. I figure that helps spread the load a bit. When we travel the rack either has the t-tops on it or two duffels. So far it's A-OK. :)

Those racks are for T-tops not luggage. The idea was you put the T-tops there and the luggage inside the car.

If you do not get the one page installation diagram, let me know, I still have mine and some of the actual parts as one of the other members replied. Yes, the one page installation manual is for the factory rear deck rack for a 1974. Car is long gone, but I still have this as an insert to the full 1974 Chevrolet Service Manual.

Hi 2 quick,
I sure hope Tex has the rack on by now since the post is a little over 12 years old!
Perhaps someone else can use the instruction sheet.
Regards,
Alan
