Default Crank Pulley

I have removed the AC from my car and now have a 3 groove pulley on the crank when I only need 2 - alternator and power steering. However the power steering belt is the closest to the radiator. Can I go to a 2 groove pulley and change the bracket for the power steering so the belt will line up?

not sure, but if i were doing the same change, i would reasearch the set-up for a ps non-AC car and find out the part numbers for pulley and ps bracket(s) and buy them. good luck.

If all belts line up as it sits now, which they should...I would leave it!

You could run a belt in the unused groove as a backup for the water pump.As it is the alt belt will be the only belt driving the pump.

You could do what I did and make a custom billet pulley without the AC groove on it (Not recommended if you are in any kind of a hurry...)

Not trying to be a smart azz, but how do you adjust or install, for that matter, a belt that runs from the crank to the water pump???

Thats a legitimate question. You dont adjust it.Picking a belt can be a little tricky because you want one that is as tight as possible because it will loosen some over time.
There are 2 ways to put the belt on.
Bolting up the crank pulley and then tilting the water pump pulley (with belt in place)onto the pump flange. This is the easiest.
The best way but a little more difficult to do is to bolt up the water pump pulley and then slip the crank pulley into place. This last way will produce the shorter tighter belt fit.
I would think this belt would carry some of the water pump load and if the alt. belt should break would allow the water pump to continue to work.I would also think this would make a longer life for the alt. bearing and the water pump bearing.Thoughts?

Yes, my '68 big block has a "captive" belt running from the water pump to the crank. On my car this is factory correct and there is no adjustment. As stated above, getting the right belt length can be tricky. I did a little research on the internet (this forum and others) and found that a belt that fit properly was carried by GM. I bought three of them as they have recently been discontinued. There were lots of different pulleys used over the years depending on hp, accessories, etc. It may be a little trial and error on finding the right belt, but you could start by wrapping a length of rope around the pulleys to get a ballpark length that you will need. Good luck.
