I'm in the process of replacing my heater control, no A/C. Can I use a heater control from an A/C car and switch over the plates? I read Willcox' paper on the rebuild and he notes that the controls are manufactured in the same manner but I wanted to make sure there weren't any issues with the swap.

Well, there are several parts in that gizmo that are different between the A/C version and the non-A/C version. The vacuum distribution manifold is different, there are A/C switches that won't be utilized. I'm sure the faceplate is different.

But, I don't have a firm grasp on exactly all the differences and whether one can be converted to the other easily...or not. My first recommendation would be to just refurbish/rebuild the one you have with only those parts that require replacement. The detail parts are mostly available from the Corvette parts vendors. Once you get it apart, you can determine what is not working correctly and repair from there. Just my 2 cents....

I took out the control and most of the guts and switches are good except the thumb wheels, strings, and the small grommets the strings are wound around. Someone had been in there before me and did some weird jury rigging. Anyway I can get a cheap 72 controller for an A/C car and wanted to make sure I can swap in the main section with the thumb wheels and strings intact and use my switches and face plates. Thanks for the help.

You can get a restoration kit for your stock control. Replaces the wheels, guides, strings, etc.

AC and non-AC controls are not the same.

Don't mean to highjack but does anyone have the routing diagram for the string that goes around the rollers?

When that paper was written, I don't believe the entire kit was available for the non ac cars. However it is now and around 77.00 (use the sale code and save more)

The wheels, and all the small parts like the pointers, the strings and wheels and so on are the same. The brackets are the same on the sides... but that is where it ends. The face is different, the vacuum select switch and the heater blower switch.
