Default 1977-82 Strg Columns in early C3s

About a year ago, I modified one of my steering column papers to indicate that a 1977 Corvette steering column might not just "bolt in" to 1969 through 1976 Vette. Also, the later 1978 through 1982 columns could be modified by cutting back the plastic shroud on the column to allow it to adapt to the later design 1978-82 instrument clusters. Here is a link to the paper with a big disclaimer at the beginning.

Has anyone tried to follow my guidelines and actually installed a 1977 or one of the 1978-82 columns into an early shark? It would be most helpful to be able to finish the paper with some direct feedback.

I actually have 2 79 columns that I am going to put one of them in later this year. I bought a new plastic shroud and will modify as needed according to your paper. I'll let you know what happens.

Jim,

We corresponded about this subject some months ago, but I installed a 79 tilt/tele column in a 72. I shortened the plastic housing 2.25", lengthened the wiring harness from the foot dimmer switch and ended up removing the wires from the 79 turn signal connector and plugging them into the 72 connector. I couldn't see a way that the plug from the 79 would mate with the 72 plug. The keys were different sizes. I have some issues with rear lights after the column change but the directional signal lever is loose so I think I need a new directional switch. One of my Winter projects. I have much bigger fish to fry at the moment.

I have a 74 with an 80 TT column in it. Also had the full dash and interior wiring from 80 in it so not sure how relevant this is to your question.

I did not put it in, but have had it out twice. Mechanically it fits fine.

Rick B,
When you said that you shortened the plastic housing shroud 2.25 inches is that the same dimension that I have included in my sketch in my paper?
