razz, 5726 out of a total of 40,614 in '80. 5757 out of40,606 in '81. I was always amazed how both those figures for both years(total cars, total 4spds)was nearly identical for 1980 and '81!!! My Yellow '80 with the Oyster interior along with the four speed seems kinda odd. Only seen two or three like it in all of the big Corvette shows I've been attending the last 6 years.

Odd how the total production and 4 speed numbers are close between 80 and 81 when you consider that 81 was the first time in a few years that you could get a 4 speed in Kalifornia. I would have thought that Kalifornia people would have added to the 4 speed total more in 81. Either way, a 4speed car looks more desireable from a numbers veiwpoint.

Re: how rare is a 1980 4speed? (1980 razz)
If I'm not mistaken there were no 4-speed L-82's from the factory in 1980,so if you see one its been done at a later date.

My brother in Atlanta has an 80 4-speed. The car is almost perfectly original with original tires. Only has about 40,000 miles on it. I use it as a resource for what is missing from my 80.

Supposedly, no 1980 L-82 4spds were made from the factory. But the Black Book lists an engine suffix code for it "ZBD", which says usage uncertain. Other '68-'82 Shark Books have quoted saying "a few may have been made", although in all my Corvette show travels I've yet to see one!!!

There are definitely a few around. Both my '79 and '80 are factory 4-speeds. I was looking in the autotrader last night and there was another '79 4-speed for sale. My '79 was sold to me as an L82, but turns out to be an L48 with emblems. I wasn't smart enough at the time to check for the L82 only options.

Re: how rare is a 1980 4speed? (1980 razz)
I tried to order a 1980 L-82 4-speed just before production started. (I ended up ordering a L-48 4-speed). I was told that the engine/trans combination did not pass emissions certification. If I remember correctly, the car had to be certified on a test schedule that required several months to complete. I was told that there was no way that the L-82 4-speed would become available later in the year because it was such a low volume combination that it was not worth the money to try and certify a second time (with just a part of a year left for production).

There is at least one 1980 L82 around somewhere. I have images of a Road and Track/Car and Driver/One of those magazines floating around somewhere that tested a 1980 L82 4spd. In any case, 1980 ZZ4 4spd would be a much better combo :D

There were one or two L82 w/ 4 spd test mules given to the press for road tests prior to the release of the '80 models to the public. There were none sold to the public because of emissions. As I've heard somewhere before (sorry, I cannot remember the source) the test cars were destroyed.

40,614 1980 Corvettes produced; 5,726 with the 4-speed option for about one in every seven. How many with the L-82? Probably no way to know for certain. How many are still out there? Also a toss-up. Cruise and enjoy.

Re: how rare is a 1980 4speed?
The only way to know for sure would be to check the VIN (or know the slight differences between what L48s and L82s are appearance wise) http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/specs/1980.html has the info

I think that, appearancewise, the only difference will be that an L82 will have aluminum valve covers. Previously, only the L82s had aluminum intake manifolds, but in '80, I think they all got them. Copy down the VIN. There are a few places on the web that will allow you to check that.

If these match you have found a rare car. The Corvette Black Book states "The 4-speed manual transmission was not available with the optional L82 engine, with the possible exception of a few early production builds." That is something else to check. The VIN build sequence should probably be under 1000.

<snip> Then check the cross member. If it is welded in then it was on original manual trans frame. Automatic used a removalble crossmember. </snip>
