2 1/4'' would be pretty small for a 383, 2 1/2'' would be a better choice.

You would be better off to do a modded or aftermarket tranny cross member and have a custom 3 inch pipe system installed.

Do a search here on the site for other posts concerning diameter of the exhaust needed vs. horse power. From what I've read here the normal to mildly built SBC will do just fine with 2.5" pipes. If you are going with a BIG hp build using a sbc or bbc then you defintiely want to look at the 3" pipes.

I have installed this exhaust system on my 76. I cut the flanges off to fit up to the adapters of my Stan's Tri-Y headers. Overall the system was a little long and had to be shortened to use my newer mufflers. Kit was of good quality and priced right. I would buy it again.

As for my car in particular.... I only have plans to do a head/cam/intake swap to get a few more hp out of her. I have no doubts this 2.25" system will serve MY needs with no problems. Your mileage may vary...

If you have any more questions feel free to PM or email me.

Many years ago when I had 350 ci I installed true dual 2.5 inch with no cats behind my 1 5/8th headman headers with 3 inch in and out race mufflers. Every time I went to the drag strip I would have to get under the car and unbolt the pipes and install some 16 inch collector extensions.

Well I had to replace my headers because they melted. So I said screw this unhooking stuff and went with 1 3/4 hooker S/C and upgraded to full three inch with 3.5 in and out race mufflers. First time out bracket racing my time was equal to my previous very consistent 12.70's

When I upgraded to 383. The free flowing exhaust was already there. Now that I installed a 434 I wished that years ago I would have installed 4 inch ovals instead of all these baby steps.

Even with a mild 383 you probably loose 25 hp going from 3 inch to 2 1/4

i got the same kit in mine along with some hooker mufflers. It was pretty easy to do and the mufflers are really quiet compared to flowmaster

Default my 383 is modest compared to manu of yours...

My 383 is all scat forged internals w/ stock vortecs.. and a mild enough cam so that the stock studs will not pull. it's a 327 / 350 cam I think.
I don't plan on building 400 + hp...330 to 350 is plenty for a cruiser... I just want more than the stock l48..
I was just thinking that 2 1/4" pipes would be sufficient with long tube headers.
I has to be better than my stock l48 system... Am I right inthinking so?

For the lack of mufler shops willing to do it for me around here for less than 1k I'm also considering this system for it's DIY aspect.

Have you guys used them with wich headers? I wonder if the Summit ones would work or if I need a Hooker header to make sure it fits perfectly.

Also have you welded it together or used the clamps only?

Thanks,
Fábio.

I talked with a guy at summit before purchasing mine and he said they were designed to work with hooker headers but would work with any with some modification. But they dont work with the th400 tranny so mine sit in the box they came in and my car sits with no exhaust.

I have installed 2 of the Hooker systems - both on '79 C3s and can tell you it is not hard. You will have to trim some of the pipes, but if you start at the back and work forward it is easy to see where it has to be cut. At 2.25" it is small for your power level, but not terrible. It is better than the factory replacement dual systems supplied by all the usual Corvette parts vendors. Even though the factory type kits are 2.5", they are compression bent and in some spots almost flat. So, even at 1/4" less diameter, the Hooker system with it's mandrel bends flows more.

The angle at which the summit headers meet the pipes proves the largest challenge. I used some summit braided couplers to make up the small angle transition.. I also used summit turbos..
I did this on the cheap as I didn't intend to do a muffler system swap when I put my 383 in.. the builder / guy helping me told me that I was going to loose massive power from the stock setup...
all in all the whole exhaust was pertty cheap...
I actually LOVE the sound.. I like it more than the welded mufflers most use on their systems.
It isn't loud until I get on it....then it LOUD...

The Summit turbos are one of the best kept secrets. They are cheap, sound evil, and last a long time + they seem to flow pretty well. When I installed mine I placed a small hydraulic jack and a block of wood under the collector on the Summit headers and the heated it with the torch while applying pressure with the jack - after 15 mins on each side the coupling angles were good.

That's a great tip.... I don't have a torch though... hehe

I was looking at this system but passed because its only 2.25in

Went with the 2.5 in Pypes SCC10R system

http://www.pypesexhaust.com/sys-vette1.html

It's currently being fitted - its a real nice slip-fit system with an x pipe. It is x-member back so if will have to be fitted to the headers.

Good Luck, Ed

Good luck finding someone to do it without catalytic converters.

Default Hooker System - OK In My Book

I have purchased two of these kits with the Hooker Aero Chamber mufflers and then the regular Hooker Turbo mufflers. Great fit and easy assembly. I have the Hooker Competition headers on the car. My only complaints were the pipe size 2 1/4" and the mufflers were too quiet.

I recently put on a 2/1/2" system from Pypes. I'll never buy from them again. A tailpipe was the wrong size as were other things. I finally had to end up at the muffler shop to complete the system.
