My 82 "pings" at low rpm when under a bit of a strain, say going uo hill. Highways are okay. I run middle grade gas and sometimes high test. What does it call for? Somone told me 87 octaine was okay but I never run it.
Even on a full tank of high test it still pings. What can cause the pinging even with high test?
Car has new plugs. Same champion # as the one that came out but new.
has it always done this or has something changed recently in your set up? how long you had it and how long has it been happening for?.................... check timing first. see what it is at. if its fairly stock and its higher then 16 degrees back it off 2 degrees at a time and see how that goes. if you havent had a plug change in a while do that next. if still persisting make sure you are getting advance with your dizzy even if its mechanical or vacum. if its still happening it may be time to delve into your heads as they may be highly carboned.
reason i asked is a buddy of mine changed his heads, and cam and now HAS TO run hi oct gas. no matter how much he adjusts timing it still pings below 93 octane. seeing its fuel injected that would be computer controlled. So i dont see where adjusting the timing would work as the computer would just account for it by adjusting itself. Did you knwo the previous owner? maybe there is a chip in it?
A 1982 computer is really not comparable to what is in cars today.
Checking the timing is a good place to start.
Also check to see if the EGR valve is operational & not plugged up.
If it is plugged up or not working it can cause pinging.

Run 93 exclusively for a couple of tanks and see if it pings. You really don't save that much going to regular. If it still pings I would check your timing. If it doesn't and it runs well I would keep feeding it the good stuff.
Are you throwing any 'codes' at all? It really sounds like the computer is not doing its job...probably because a sensor is not reading properly. Sometimes a sensor goes bad, but not far enough off to throw a code. If I were to guess, I'd suspect the O2 sensor. How old is it?
