Default Head Gasket Bore

I'll be using either Brodix 64cc IK180 head or Dart Iron Eagle 64cc/180cc and am trying to pick my head gasket. What bore of a head gasket do I use on my 350? I go to summit and I got a million choices from 4.000 to 4.250. The block is not zero decked, but I figured I would not want a gasket that matches the bore exactly.

Or will they all work and the bore diameter is dependent on the type of gasket I choose?

Just go to a local parts house and get a set of Mr. Gasket or Fel-Pro head gaskets for your year block. They will work with your heads and the bore won't be the same.

Well I'm trying to calculate my CR, so the bore does matter. Infact, to get a 10:1, I need something along the lines of 4.000 bore and a 0.028 compressed thickness. So if I cannot use a 4.000 inch bore gasket, I need to recalculate. My goal is 10:1.

Use the GM 14096405, .028" stainless and graphite faced head gasket for aluminum heads, it's what comes on the ZZ engines.

I was looking at the GM 10105117. I'm not sure if I'm using the Brodix IK180 heads or the Dart Iron Eagles.

So does bore diameter really not matter?

I got a 4.060 Cometic gasket for my 4.030 bore and had to go bigger to a Felpro 4.120 to get it to seal properly.

You can use the standard bore head gaskets up to .030 over. You must keep the gaskets fire ring out of the bore. Felpro 7733 PT1 is the number is I recall correctly. The best gasket for aluminum heads is one made of copper. Otherwise the GM gasket for aluminum heads would be my second choice. McCord copper gaskets if you can find them was OEM on all the 427 L88`s and the 426 A990 Hemi. Hard to find though and only was available in full sets.

Interesting, so up to .030 over the bore size? So I really can't go any larger than a 4.030? What about down to? You think I would be fine with a 4.000 head gasket bore on a 4.000?

I'm not sure if I'm going aluminum and getting the Brodix 180K yet, but the Dart Iron Eagle Platinums. If I go the Brodix, then I can use the copper, so I can get a higher compression, but if I get the Darts I'm going to have to use a composite.

Also must be kept away from any chamfer.
Wally knows all about this but the uninitiated may not've learned ... it's typical (when machine shop reconditions block for overhaul) to have a slight chamfer cut into the edge of top of bore . So ... a block that's bored to 4.030 may have a chamfer with od about 4.060. Safe bet that minimum bore of either 10105117 & 14096405 is 4.100" ... safe bet either will work for 350 overhaul ... even at 4.060 ... I KNOW 10105117 worked on race motor w/ 4.040 bore with chamfer. Same goes for Victor 5746 ... seems these guys sell em: http://www.cnc-motorsports.com/produ...08&CtgID=20320

This is a published spec for every gasket - note that the gasket bore doesn't exactly match the bore; the most common size is around 4.133 for the "standard" FelPro 350 gasket.

Not to hijack, but what is the rule of thumb here? just give a .100" clearance on any gasket size? .. is it also applied for big blocks??
