Default SBC AFR 195 Eliminator and Hooker Sidepipe Headers - Will this work?

OK, I currently have a 355 with Edelbrock RPM heads (straight plugs) and Hooker sidepipes with no clearance issues.

I am looking to build a 383 this winter and am looking at the AFR 195 Eliminator heads. I would like to get the competition versions but they only come with angle plugs. Hooker says angle plugs will not fit.

Question 1) Has anyone made the angle plug AFR 195 Eliminators work with the Hooker sidepipes with out banging the tubes? Or do I need the straight plug version?

Question 2) Do the .100" raised ports cause frame clearance issues with the Hooker sidepipe headers?

The headers are staying. No need to tell me that Flowtech or Dynomax work. Only interested in Hooker Sidepipe headers.

If you know of any other heads that are comparable performance wise and will fit, I would be interested in hearing about it. Just very interested in the AFR since Chevy High Performance built a 383 with AFR 195 Eliminator heads (PN1040, angle plug, 65cc) and made 491 hp with a 224/236 @ .050" hyd roller cam.

You might have good luck with dart pro 1 200cc platinums.

Thanks. Angle or straight plug?

I looked at the Dart site and they have stock exhaust location but do claimed flow at .500" lift is 264 for the Darts vice 274 and 280 respectivley for the AFR street and competion heads. I am looking at about .550 lift so I don't want the heads to stall out above .500 flow. CHP has an article on the DART heads and show that the spark plug is higher in the head than their older heads. That may cause some clearance issues.

Still, definitely a possible.

I run the 180 heads, which I believe are the same.
.100 raised exhaust ports and angle plugs, with the hooker sidemounts. No problems, the angle plugs seem like they would fit better than the straights

I test fitted a set of hooker sidepipe headers on mine with Vic Jr angle plug heads with .300" raised exhaust ports and there was plenty of room.

The header primary tubes seem to come straight out away from the head and there is more much more room than the under car SuperComps for example

Call AFR, I'd bet they will comp port a set of straight plug heads, for a fee.

I have AFR 195 Eliminators angle plug with Hooker sidepipe headers and have NO fitment problems at all. I have even done a compression check and you know how difficult it can be to screw that hose in if there is no clearance.

Thanks, exactly the info I was looking for. One small question. What plugs are you using? Did you need the short Accell plugs?

Ive got vic jrs and the hooker super comps, regular headers, dont clear at the #6 plug,i had to have a custom headers shop reroute the #8 TUBE TO CLEAR THE #6 PLUG,watch out for this.I also had problems with the collectors too far outward and they run right into the floor boards,i had to get the collectors shortened.a nightmare.

I also have the AFR 195 eliminators with angle plug ports using regular plugs and have Hooker side pipes too.....No problems. I think they are easier to get at the plugs than before.

you can download the CamQuest simulator from comp cams website for free. for my proposed combination there was only about a 4 HP difference between the 195 comp and street versions. you can get the street heads with straight plugs. now, how accurate are the sims numbers?

I had to do the same thing to my undercar SuperComps, he is asking about the sidepipe headers which are routed completely different than the under car headers

Take a look at the pics above of 63mako they show the sidepipe headers clear everything nicely
