When I turn on the ignition the tach zero's out. The tach is dead on all the time it's running but when I turn off the ignition the tach spins around the dial like the wheel of fortune. I don't know it I should fix it or start taking bets! Any ideas?

Never seen that before but I want mine to do it.
I dont think there is a stop pin on the face but I wonder if the meter is stopped inside somehow.

It a '76(?) electronic tach which replaced the very annoying mechanical tach that came with the car. I suppose it isn't hurting anything but it is weird!

Check the connection to the disdtibutor...yellow and red wire enter on the drivers side of the dist. I would guess, the most likley cause is a grounding issue on the back of the tac circuit board. Is the '76 mechanical or electric tac. My '77 has a small circuit board I had to replace last year.

Occasionally, the damping fluid in the meter head itself dries out and it has to be re-damped. Causes the tach to act goofy sometimes. That may be the problem. Just a thought.

Bill,is the fuel gauge dampened the same way?I just replaced one that was accurate but the needle followed every move of the float in the tank.I was planning on an exploratory mission deep inside to check it out.

I've never heard of redamping the head. How is that done?
