With the horsepower your looking for better throw in some cash for a hood-or be willing to cut or scoop yours.Personnaly i am glad i went with the 540-750hp for 9000 turn key,on pump gas,and n20 if your get close (Plus the sound diff).

My Opinion,
.
For small blocks to produce 500 HP your stretching the envelope on reliability. Too much high dollar fragile junk through out the engine to make that kind of power. Now what I would do is a BB Chevy crate engine. 500+ HP is available without changing a thing and all by over the counter OE parts. Nothing fancy is required as its all in the crate. Or a real late LS model Vette engine but never a SB Chevy. It could be used to help start a BB,...that's been done before with a BB/SB tandem dragster....Ran like crap too...

I think you meant go buy a C5 Z06 but I agree with you. After all is said and done, the chassis engineering is still almost 40 years old and leaves allot to be desired in the handling dept.. OK if you're going in a straight line at the strip or just running around town smoking the tires.
Regarding the OP's question about a 500HP engine, I'd take a look at GM's newest catelog. They have quite a few SB's in there including a whole bunch of LS versions that might be something you would like. Just read the catelog today and their list of options is bigger and better than ever.

You're looking at 10,000+ USD to accomplish your engine/tranny/iginition swap goal.
Why not just buy a 454HO crate engine for $5500 and change the cam or throw some nitrous on it (fully forged internals)? For less than $1000 in additional parts you can be done and the big block will sound sooooo sweet

Small block will keep up.I use a 505 with a 350 trans. and 411 gears.I can run 11..00 quarter mile times all day long.I do use drag radical tires
