With the horsepower your looking for better throw in some cash for a hood-or be willing to cut or scoop yours.Personnaly i am glad i went with the 540-750hp for 9000 turn key,on pump gas,and n20 if your get close (Plus the sound diff).

Default My Opinion,

.

For small blocks to produce 500 HP your stretching the envelope on reliability. Too much high dollar fragile junk through out the engine to make that kind of power. Now what I would do is a BB Chevy crate engine. 500+ HP is available without changing a thing and all by over the counter OE parts. Nothing fancy is required as its all in the crate. Or a real late LS model Vette engine but never a SB Chevy. It could be used to help start a BB,...that's been done before with a BB/SB tandem dragster....Ran like crap too...

You just need to set your car up better .... a C3 can be made to handle. No it won't be a C6Z06 killer, but they can handle pretty darn good, and will exceed most people's capability.

Regarding the OP's question about a 500HP engine, I'd take a look at GM's newest catelog. They have quite a few SB's in there including a whole bunch of LS versions that might be something you would like. Just read the catelog today and their list of options is bigger and better than ever.

Why not just buy a 454HO crate engine for $5500 and change the cam or throw some nitrous on it (fully forged internals)? For less than $1000 in additional parts you can be done and the big block will sound sooooo sweet
the best way to have 500 plus hp is to go with a crate 454 or 502.It will put out his much HP all day all.No high RPM's.I would suggest a crate engine and 700 r transmission with 373 grears.Very few of these
Small block will keep up.I use a 505 with a 350 trans. and 411 gears.I can run 11..00 quarter mile times all day long.I do use drag radical tires
