I'm in the process of replacing the power steering on a 1980. I have the cylinder off and all the hoses disconnected but can't get the valve body off. I've tried everything I can think of with no luck. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Did you take the bolt out of the valve?once you do this it should turn off the rod.You can also use a large screwdriver to open the pinch up were to take the bolt out.I hope this helps

Sometimes you need to insert a pry bar between the ears and gently pry after the bolt is removed. This should work for you. In other words, open it up a little bit!

Took the bolt out and tried both a screwdriver and my tie rod seperator to open it up, but it still won't turn off. Looking at the new one I'm pretty sure it's standard thread and not reverse thread, correct?

Correct it is standard threads.Try soaking it with some pentrating oil PB Balaster and let it soak in and try later.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've already sprayed it up real good and plan on letting it sit until tomorrow and then trying again. If anyone else has any suggestions though I'm open to any and all.

A lot of crud gets into those threads. Soak with PB for a week if necessary and try turning it with a pipe wrench. If you can get the valve to move even a little, keep turning it back and forth and eventually the range of movement will increase. Apply PB as needed to keep things going.

Thanks everyone for your advice and suggestions. The valve is off by soaking it overnight in rust penetrant and then I reversed the clamping bolt and inserted a piece of steel in the crack so by tightening the bolt it actually opened the ears. Then once it broke free I was able to turn it off by hand.
