I am trying to determine what the correct maincase numbers should be for my Muncie. My car is a 68 so that should be 3925660. But it was built on 10/4/67, of which a 67 case is 3885010. Which one is correct? Did they also have casting dates?

There is a date code stamped on the top of the main case. If your trannie was built on the same day as your car(unlikely) it would be stamped as follows with the last letter designating a M20,21 or 22
P for Muncie, 7 for the year of manufacture, 04 for the 4th day of the month, and then A for the ratio. P704A
Look at the two sites below and you should be able to figure it out. The third site is a ebay site that shows a build date on a trannie. That one has more than five numbers and letters but I think they made some numbering changes in 1969.
If you look at the Ebay site you will see a number to the left of the build date number. If I remember right, that is the vehicle VIN number.
I am writing this pretty fast so I hope I got everything reasonably correct.

Thanks Kevin!
I remembered this morning that I had not included the month!
That would make the date 10/04/1967 read P7R04. I also remember now as stated in at least one of the articles that they did not add the letter designation for M20, 21 or 22 until 1969. Hope I got it right this time. If not please chime in.
I am a old fart and it was 11:30 PM when I was writing the original reply. Sleepy time!
ps: Kevin, lets get that profile corrected, we aren't in Illinois anymore!

I would think the stamp date would be a 3 - 6 weeks before. Since it is a early car I am sure they were scrambling to get parts together at the last minute just like most other manufacturers.
But anyway my question really is what is the casting number for a 68 car built in late October 67. Not the date stamp.

Guess I was reading the wrong thing into your question! I was thinking that how far ahead of your cars build date the build date of the trannie was might give you a clue if it was a left over or not.
The answer you are looking for may not be exact. Not sure how you could find out other than ask guys here that have a 68 in the same time frame (a little before and after) as yours. But even that is not 100% certain.
I know I was surprised the first time I saw a early 65 vette with drum brakes.
RED71....I tried to change my location, but have yet to figure out how!!??
I was trying to do that last night, and couldn't figure it out,but I never claimed to be the sharpest tool in the shed.

I'm not either.
So then when did 68's go to 660? In January?
