Semi-flat black is the right color and level of gloss; but I'm not sure that Krylon paint is up to the task of a durable exterior paint on bare metal. Any of you paint guys got the 'skinny' on this one? Is the John Deere "Blitz Black" a better [quality] choice?

I used a satin black finish on mine looks just like original. I lightly sanded and primed mine. I used a krylon type paint. I don't remember what brand it was now. I did this about 4 years ago. Still looks new.

Shark - you use special primer / etch, or just flat black primer?

I plan to do this myself soon also.

I used a grey primer. I didn't want to paint black over a black primer because I wanted to be sure I was getting good coverage. It was all rattle can stuff, but it came out good. Just be sure you don't use a primer with a rust inhibiter in it like Rustoleum, it makes the paint have "fish eyes" in it from the oils. I've got pics somewhere of the proccess. I'll see if I can post em later.
