notice the alt bracket in the top pic. the bolt is a stud that tightens up against the water pump and it has another threaded section that secures the alt bracket.

I looked up and crossed all kinds of numbers and brought home a dozen belts before I got all the correct belts that work great for this engine. I will go out and get the Goodyear belt numbers off them and post them here tomorrow. My engine is all assembled and sitting on a stand if any other info/pics would be helpful to anybody..

The rebuilt engine looks nice.
Is the carb missing, or does the air filter really sit that low? Why not add the steel fuel line while the engine is out and easy to do?

Man thanks for posting these pics....In about 2 wks I will be installing all of the 71' BB brackets on a new build and I had no idea how they went. I have looked at the catalog pics but its not the same. This will help big time.

As for the numbers on the belts, that would also help big time. I went to Oreily's to try to get belts and their routing diagrams are not correct. Any good belt numbers for Good Year or Gates belts would be AWESOME....

Great looking engine!
The 454 belts come up from time to time...the last time I posted about testing different belts back in the 70's until I liked the fit, I was blasted for my comments. I was told there are CORRECT BELTS for my engine, so get them. Anyway, I found Gates belts that fit the way that I like.

I'm curious to see your belt part numbers and will record them in my book for future reference.

Through trial and error, here are the Gates belts that I use on my '71 454 with A/C and Power Steering.

A/C Belt: Gates #9463, 1/2" X 46 3/8"
P/S Belt: Gates #7453, 3/8" X 44 1/8"
Alt. Belt: Gates #7300, 3/8" X 30 5/8"
WP to Crank: Gates #7320, 3/8" X 32 5/8"

*NOTE* To install the WP to Crank belt, I remove the WP pulley and slip the belt into position, then I install the pulley onto the WP. This way, the belt fits good and the tensioner wheel isn't pushed in too far.

this is awesome thanks for those. i have been looking for a while. time to bookmark this page. as many times as people have asked about BB belts and how they are always wrong at the parts houses someone should post a sticky with the numbers.

Yep my carb was being rebuilt at that time and I have not done the fuel line yet cause I'm not sure I'm sticking with the Q-jet. Those Fast EZ efi systems look sweet! Anyways after a lot of trail and error with several wrong aplication listings I ended up with 4 Goodyear belts that I believe are correct. They all fit well with plenty of adjustment left on all the accessories. The crank/water pump belt was snug and I had to slide the pully on with the belt in place but that was good as the tensioner is just adding a little more tension and has plenty of travel left. The Goodyear belts I ended up with are...

15446 p/s w/p crank
15466 w/p a/c
15325 w/p crank
13311 p/s alt

If you want you can skip the tensioner and use a slightly shorter belt. I'll check the Gates PN tonight.

This is just some "aside" info....

I went through the '71 AIM and your set-up is correct per their drawings. But...all that detailed info in NOT on one drawing. It is a combination of drawings based on the options appearing on the car. There is one drawing with the general belt layout; then the LS5 option drawings show the proper layout with a 'standard' LS5 engine [without options]; then there is a detailed parts drawing of the N40 power steering for the LS5, another of the C60 A/C with the LS5, and a third on the alternator layout for the LS5 with the C60 and the N40. Once you have all those drawings, you can finally piece together what the '71 LS5 belt/hardware layout is with C60 and N40. Interestingly, the LS5 does not call for the A.I.R. pump on any of its configurations.

Would you happen to have any more pics of your motor? particularly of the alternator? I just bought a rebuilt alternator for a BB but it doesn't seem to have the thick pulley on it to space the groove further forward. I am curious if yours does....

If you notice on Airtime's, his alternator has a thick pulley...looks like its needed for the belts to line up. I might be in trouble on this one.

My Alt pully is not right yet. I'm putting back together a mess somebody else started. The pully I had did not have any spacing on it at all and set back way too far. I got a new one from Wilcox that has a thick spacing on the back side but its a bit too much so its out a tad bit too far now. I am going to get a 1/8" or so turned off it and it should be perfect.
