Default from a turbo 350 to a 200R4 trans swap?

has anyone successfully completed the th350 to a 200R4 trans swap out? i have never delt with the 200R4 before and am a little skeptical, but for lack of a better option for attaining overdrive. im going for it. i picked up the 200R, dropped my th350 set the m side by side and noticed a couple differences. one... there is no vacume module on the 200R4 instead there is an electrical connector on the drivers side of the trans. is this going to have an effect on the operation when its in the car? what change outs or modifications do i need to do to this 200R4 before i put it up into the car so it will work?

any suggestions, tips, or info on weather this will work or not would be GREAT!

thanks shaun

It will definitely work. You may have to modify your cross member. you will need to install a method of locking your converter clutch. You will not need the vacuum line, and extreme care should be taken to adjust the tv cable properly. There are lots of threads here where members have done this swap and lots of good information.

You can use the stock crossmember. Just ditch the small support the thm 350 was bolted to. You need to run a lockup relay wired into the brake switch then to the trans connection . Depending on how you wire it you may need to replace the 4th gear pressure switch with a 2 pin N/O switch. Then depending on what carb you have you will have to get an adapter for the tv cable

i did the 700r4 swap.....so you need to get wired for the lock up converter with a cut out relay for the brakes......and if the 2004r is like the 700r4 then you will need to get the correct bracketry for the TV cable, i also had to shorten the drive shaft for the 700r4 swap, i dont know if you have to or not for the 2004r. but if you do the yoke gets balanced with the drive shaft so take it with you. i bought an already engineered kit from BTO.

I'm in the process....worked with Chris at CK Performance getting all the things I needed to rebuild & install my 200-R....it's now rebuilt & painted...worked with Kevin at Keen's Corvette Parts....he sent me part #125-340187 which is a '64-'77 auto trans mountchecking the holes in the bottom of my trans & the holes in the crossmember, I can use that part to mate my 200-4R directly to the cross member without modifications......had my old driveshaft balanced & checked, no modifications necessary.

Chris sent me a shorter dip stick assembly which you'll need & he also sent my a universal TV cable...I also bought a Hayden trans cooler as I want to run my hoses from the trans to the cooler in the radiator then to the Hayden cooler out front of the condenser then back to the trans.

All the old trans bolts work with the 200-4R.

I'm painting my '86 TPI engine right now & should have my engine/trans mounted on my frame by next weekend if everything goes as planned.

If a 200R4 uses a TV cable like a 700R4 then be sure to adjust it before you move the car. You can ruin a trans almost immediately if the TV cable is not adjusted properly.

I have done some research on the 2004r - plan to swap the TH350 in my '73 Camaro for one.

The short tailshaft TH350 is the same size as the 2004r - I plan to use the TH350 driveshaft and rear yoke. Crossmember mods are easily done. Shiftworks makes a kit for the Camaro that mods the stock shifter linkage/housing to accomidate the extra OD gear.

I plan to have my tranny guy setup the TV cable - I have also read that this is critical in getting good life out of it. I like the gearspread on the 2004r - especially if running a 3;73 rear - and understand that if built properly, it can be made to live at 400-450tq. My tranny guy also recommended a deep pan and external cooler as well.

Good Luck, Ed

I used to recommend a relay in there to control the + 12 feed to the tranny, but no longer....I discovered/hints from here/there that to change the brake light switch on the pedal assy so it got changed to a BWD # S870 so to use that extra switch section for the tranny, it OPENS when the brakes are hit.....unlocking the converter on the + side....the connector on my '72 plugged right into the brake light section....

so I simplified my car a tad by doing that.....

just make sure you use a SWTICHED 12 volt source not a constant 12 for the tranny section hot lead....

The folk at Bowtie Transmissions were a tremendous help to me in my TH350 to 2004R swap. They've got everthing you need and a good guarantee on their product. If you decide to go with BTO then you must follow their installation instructions to the letter. The instructions are step-by-step and easy but do follow them. I've run my BTO for 3 hard years without issues.
