Hopefully fixed oil consumption.
My 68 big block convertible used lots of oil and with some help of you forum guys, I found the valve stem seals in poor condition, some even cracked.
This was evident also by fresh oil on the ignitor plugs.
So I ordered a set of umbrella seals and replaced them yesterday.
A friend gave me his valve compression tool , shown in the pic and this made the job a piece of cake.
In the mean time, I replaced all rockers as the old nuts had lousy running torque and some rockers showed small pitting where they run on the valves.
This is a solid lifter original L71 head setup.
Pic shows the tool in action.

How's the weather in Luxembourg? I visited there once about 8 years ago during the summer, it was very nice.
Hope the new seals fix it!
Weather is still lousy, only +5 C, lots of rain. All big rivers are overfull and plenty floodings already all around.
It normaly takes to beginning of May, till I insure my 68 big block convertible, as I only drive it during dry weather, if just possible, so some time left for some more cosmetic work.
I'm still waiting for a fuel qty gauge in order to reassemble the center console.
Also the original 68 stereo radio needs to be installed.
Right now I'm fixing some cracks that occured at the front bumper corner attachment. Looks like if the previous owner hit something.
Hey, if you ever visit this part of the world again, feel free to pass by.

I'd love to go back some day but it would have to be after college. Thank you very much though.
I have one question about your sidepipes. In your photos (very nice by the way :yesnod:)it looks like they have a sort of heat sheild on them, do they get very hot? If not where did you get them? I had been considering sidepipes because I really like the looks of them (metallic as opposed to painted fiberglass) but wouldn't want to be burning myself all the time.
Take care.

Matt , the sidepipe covers are aftermarket shields. I saw them in a automotive wholesale catalogue and they came in different lenght.
Myne are held with welded on studs and nuts.
Yes, this pipes become very hot and this shields are a must if you want to grow up your kids without ugly looking burning marks on the legs. :D
I personally also like the look.
Franco , my L71 head valve springs are singles with dampers.
I don't know if this umbrella seals also fit with double springs, sorry.
I think, they are cheap enough to give it a try anyway.
In May, I can tell if this seals fixed my oil consumption, but I would already bet so as about 1/2 of the oldones where cracked.
Funny, the engine was reworked 10 yeras ago and both heads valve seats got reworked. The previous owner sweares that all umbrella seals where imaculate and he did not replace them. What a shame for such a cheap item.
I'm looking forward to spring time.
