Is this the one you are using?

OK, I picked up a master cylinder from a '95 camaro at the boneyard, (they don't have any corvettes there.......) and it bolts up perfectly, but the brake lines are on the passenger side of the M/C. Can I get custom brake lines made for this, and if so, where? What sort of shop does this kind of work? Will I have to change the proportioning at all?

Around here there is a place that makes hydraulic lines for comercial equipment. They also make lines for race cars. There may be a place like that in your area.

As for proportioning, the MC doesn't do anything with that (with few exceptions). In a C3 it has to do with the ratio between the front and rear caliper pistons.

Thought it worth mentioning here that C3 power brake master cylinders have 1.125" bores and that manuals have 1", the latter of which displaces less fluid for a given amount of pedal movement.

Interesting thread. I have been wanting to put hydroboost in the car anyway. Now at the same time, I may have to think a little about adding a smaller, lighter master.

True, but most people don't think about how far they have to push the pedal, they think about how hard they have to push the pedal. I don't think of the brake system as displacing fluid. I think of it as pressures and forces. A smaller piston in the master will cause a higher line pressure for a given pedal pressure. That higher line pressure will cause a higher clamping force in the caliper. The pedal will move a bit more, but you will not have to press as hard on the pedal to stop.

Conversely, if you increase the bore size, you will have to press harder on the pedal to stop in a given distance.

A lot of Shops Flat out will not make Brake Lines due to liability reasons. I'm wondering if the C5 Master has enough Metal to machiine the Metric Threads out and install an addapter Fitting. Most new stuff I have tryed to do this to is Pot Metal and dosn't machine very well. I'd love to do the C5 but I have Exhaust to Close and the Plastic would melt for sure. You guys who have the Wilwood is it the same size as the Stock one or is it any Smaller in overall size? I am very tight here and I have no room to get bigger what so ever. Thanx..

I'm still in the process of my convert to manual brakes, but thought I'd throw this pic out for you guys to see. The master cylinder is from Summit, (Tough Stuff) the plate I fabbed from 3/4" thick aluminum, and I rigged a new pushrod/clevis for the pedal. The master cylinder bore is 1", and has the deep piston bore for manual brakes.

My reason for the convert was I didn't like the big ugly booster anyway, and with the lumpy cam I'm running the power brakes weren't that great. So all said and done, I should have lots more room to get to my rear sparkplugs, better brakes, and some more shine too!

Can you post a picture of your setup?
I'm doing well with the C5 m/c and headers on a big block. I'm just curious what your setup looks like, given your concerns about the C5 m/c.

Sweet looking setup!

A C5 m/c is a bit smaller in size (compared to a C3 m/c), which would give you a bit larger air space between the exhaust and cylinder.

I'm with you, Eddie.

I have a HB setup waiting to install and bought a replacement late model (77 & up) MC with the shallow (vs deep) piston cup difference.

Depending on metric tube makeup, this is yet another option to consider for me. Hmmmn...

Getting closer to doing something along these lines this myself, converting to manual from power at the same time.

So, any updates from those with or doing this conversion, including finished pics from 70 LS1?

What is the objective of this mod? I read weight savings, is that the goal? Any other reasons? Nothing wrong with saving weight, I'm just curious.

With the weight savings being magnified by the MC's rather high location in the chassis, IMHO this is a very good place to shave a few pounds, and without any detrimental effects (difficulty aside). At least, that's the primary reason I'm considering it. Others may be interested in it just because it's a modernizing thing.

Just to clarify:
Do we need to switch the brake lines?
