350 Harmonic bal Problems...Help?
I am new to this forum and look forward to learning from all the posts and expertise here. My wife's car is a '69 with a 350 motor and turbo 400. I think the motor might have come out of a truck (not sure). It was fully rebuilt and it was running for a very short time when I noticed the original balancer was wobbling.
I purchased a new balance from "Professional Products" , 8" , part no. 80002. Very nice product to my eyes. It has full timing marks and looks to be very nicely crafted. Now the problem is when I installed it and fully seated it, the fully seated crank pulley is about 3/16" farther in than all other pulleys mounted.
Unfortunately, I didn't line them up next to eachother and match them up to make sure they are exactly the same. I assumed they were
. Does anyone know if there is a difference with a truck engine balancer from the pass car ones? Has anyone any experience with this balancer or this problem.? Does this mismatch of about 3/16" sound familiar with anyone?
Thanks for any guidance.
Greg.

Welcome Aboard Greg.
I am not sure if there is a difference between truck and car but there is a difference based on the manufacture year of the engine. I believe 1969-1972 350's have the same pulleys but 1973 to 1982 have different pulleys.
Are there spacers on the other pulleys that can be played with? If not I suspect you will have to get the right pulley.
Are you sure its out 3/16? When I put mine back on this summer it looked out but it was an optical illusion. Everything lined up and worked fine when the belts were on.

here's what you need, Moroso crank pulley shim kit p/n 64031 fits between damper & crank pulley.
http://www.moroso.com/catalog/catego...?catcode=34031
very common issue and dimensions vary from mfg & model. You can fix this w/ flat washers but 3-hole shim as above is better ... you can stack shim as needed. Plenty race cars with this ... it's not shade tree.
Shims also available to fit between water pump hub & wp pulley.
summit, jegs etc probably sell moroso shims.

Thanks for the shim kit tip, Jackson. I ordered one and just received it today. That will take care of the problem...I just wanted to make sure it wasn't strange issue. If they make a shim kit, it must be a common problem as you say.
Thanks for the help, and I am positive I will have more to ask. In the meantime, I will tune in and learn from you guys.
Oh, I tried to edit my personal info and wasn't able to. How do you do it so that I can list my hometown? I was signed into my account and could not change anything.
Thanks,
Greg.
Suggest you scribe a line across new damper thru inner metal hub & outer metal ring ... that way you can periodically check it ... to verify outer ring has/hasn't slipped. Scribe Not paint.
