Does anyone have an idea how much a pint or quart of SEM Color Coat is ?
I started to use spray cans of dye, but that gets expensive now that I decided to rework the whole interior. I can't get a straight answer out of the wholesalers here.
The cans are about $15/can at Eckler's. I am thinking about getting a spraygun to use with my compressor but that all depends on the price of the Color Coat.
Call your SEM distributor or an automotive paint supplier carrying SEM products. I agree -- the SEM will probably be cheaper overall than several rattle cans.

I did. There are not many around where I live. I have not found one that can mix the color to the shade that I started to use.
And as far as the cost It seems to depend on what I will select and how much I will buy.
I just bought a pint of SEM "Color Coat" interior dye for about $15. The price depends on the store you buy it from. Some charge more than others. One pint of dye, one Preval gas cannister/bottle sprayer ($6) and an extra gas cannister or two ($2-3 each) will do an entire interior, if you don't have to do seat covers. Two pints will do ANY C3 interior completely (unless you shoot 3 or 4 coats of dye on everything.
Buying spray cans at $15-20 each is insane when the items above will do a BETTER job for a maximum of $50. And you still have the spray equipment and excess dye to save for later!

Thanks for the info. I just have to find a supplier now that is close to me.
Call paint stores that supply paint and body shops (professional places). Local auto parts stores won't have it.
I went to the SEM website. The first 5 either don't carry it anymore or can't mix a color that matches the parts I already painted. I might have them mix the original color now since the cost of the dye is not and issue if I buy it in quart sizes.
This is what I do when painting Interiors with very good results.
I get a pint or so of Base Coat of the correct Color. The Interior Color code is usually in the Chip Book under the Exterior Colors. Mix with a reducer as required. I use slow. Add 5% of Clearcoat Hardner (slow) and spray away.
The hardner give more durability to the Base. Much tougher than Lacquer(dye). The Base is also very thin and won't fill the Grain in the Interior parts.
If you want a flatter look, use a faster drying Reducer. The slow gives a mild Gloss. Of coarse spraying technique's and equipment makes a differance in the final product.
Make sure everything is clean. I use Comet/water and a red Scotch-Brite to prep. A very light coat Self-etching Primer for primer.

Marty.
Thanks Marty
if you don't mind me asking; what kind of equipment do you use ?
I was thinking about getting a Preval gas cannister/bottle sprayer or getting a 'real' spraygun to use with my compressor.

How long do those paint canisters last? How many oz can you paint with one ?
Those bottle sprayers are great for vinyl dye. Dye is much thinner than regular paint, so it easily atomizes and you get a nice, fine spray out of it. Vinyl dye is much more 'forgiving' than paint, too. If you get a little run, just leave it alone; it will dry flat...paint won't.
I would estimate that two gas cannisters would spray a pint of dye. When the gas pressure starts to get low, the dye starts 'sputtering' and spits some droplets. These will dry flat too, but it is an indication that you need to change cannisters.

I got one this morning and will get the dye tomorrow.
Thanks a lot everybody.

I use a Sata NR 2000.
I have used the Preval kit's with success when I was spot painting Corperate Aircraft, but I like the adjustablity and even coverage of of a paint Gun. What's great about the Preval's is being able to mix your paint properly with Reducer's and Hardner's and applying in a Spray can fashion.
"Sometime's" when they start to sputter, the gas is getting to cold from extended use. Warm the Canister up and try again later just to make sure. Let it sit a bit or run the cannister under warm water.
