Muncie speedo gear removal
I'm rebuilding my 71' Muncie 4-speed and need to remove the speedo gear from the output shaft. Looks like it is pressed on, what is the correct way to remove it? The book just says to use an "extraction tool".

If it's a metal gear, it's pressed on. Chevy dealers had a puller to remove it. Use a soft metal punch and tap on both sides to work it off. Using the puller is a pain. Use the punch at the bottom of the gear where it meets the shaft

I have the puller and was going to take a pic of it but can't find it because I use a press because its faster and easier. Duke imagine your steering wheel puller on the end of the trans output shaft connected to this http://www.handsontools.com/Kent-Moo...r_p_20664.html by very long bolts. The tool in this link goes under the speedo gear.

This is what I came up with. I didn't try real hard, but I couldn't budge the gear. Does the gear have to come off to get the output shaft out of the case? If it doesn't, then I could maybe use my Hydraulic press.

I have never pulled that gear but I'm surprised your set up doesn't work? Maybe a little heat on the gear, propane not acetylene, while you have tension on the puller?

I used an aftermarket metal circle gear like you have as a replacement to the original (in an attempt to get the speedometer reading correctly via tooth count) and I will say this...you better be sure you have that circle gear marked exactly where it sits on the output shaft because if you don't and it's off a little when you get it back together it will eat up your speedo gear and you'll have no speedometer...ask me how I know.

1st measure fromthe gear to the end of the shaft ,it should be roughly 6.3/4" 2nd Warm the gear a little with some propane or map gas. 3rd. Apply some penetrating lube and apply pressure with your puller
