Default C3 LS engine and coil relocation

Hi there,
I have an option to get a LS3 crate engine for my 77 Vette and need to know the following:
- Are there at least 3 inches of space between the back of the cylinder head and the firewall once a LS engine is installed? I know it depends a bit on what engine mounting plates are used.

The LS engine available to me has a coil relocation system installed similar to this:

I am fully aware of all the install topics listed in other threads and ls1tech, but I haven't found anything related to coil relocation.

Thanks!!
Michael

I can take a look in the morning. I know there isn't 3" of space between the block and firewall but I'm not sure about the heads.

If that coil relocation kit mounts the coils flush with the back edge of the block you should be OK.

Rick, thanks. That would be great. Indeed the space needed is between the back of the heads and the firewall.
The coils can actually be relocated anywhere with this kit, but the back of the engine as pictured is the most obvious place.

Can you also tell me what mounting plates you use along with the measurement?

Thanks!
Michael.

I'm using the "standard" plates (similar to the vetteworks) - on the left side of the engine I have right at 3", however, on the right side things are much tighter with closer to 2.25" - and it gets worse as you move further outside toward the fender due to the evaporator box. Mine is a 79 FWIW

I initially used the 1" setback plates for stock location. The clearance was very tight on my 68. Pic of drivers side below, the passenger head was evebn tighter. I ended up using the mounts that share the bottom 3 bolt SBC mount hole with the front, bottom, LS mount hole.
The only issue I've seen on coil relocation was getting a good ground.

Those are the measurements I got also when I took a look a few minutes ago. I have some vacuum piping running along the firewall also so that would possibly cut into the available room.

Excellent. Thanks for the information and a Happy New Year to all !
I will take some detailed measurements on the engine and see if there might be a problem especially with the passenger side.
