Default Is there any way to quiet '69 BB side pipe mufflers?

Recently installed Allen's stock configuration side pipe mufflers on my '69 427 coupe with stock exhaust manifolds. The mufflers and pipes are very well built and look stock, but they are too loud for my taste.

I want to keep stock appearing mufflers and covers as this is an original side pipe car. I am trying to figure out what I cqn do, if anything, to reduce the noise level.

I would appreciate any recommendations of fixes to the existing pipes/mufflers I have or for other, quieter side pipe muffler brands I should consider purchasing.

Thanks in advance.

Replace with undercarriage exhaust.

Sorry, I don't mean to be a smart a$$, but mine were too loud on my '69 L71, and I took them off (they weren't original anyway).

I live in a suburban nieghborhood and it was just too disruptive. I felt like Jeff Gordon every time I backed out of the driveway.

Well, living in the Chicago area myself, I would think noise shouldn't be a problem until spring.

Have you talked to Allens what can be done? Resonators?

my dad had a 67 with sidepipes and he stuffed it with steel wool to get it thru inspection but that was 30 years ago. It was a 427 tri power vert !

Not trying to start a debate over loud vs. quiet mufflers. I have loud pipes on my Harley that I love. No slam on Allen's either, they make a great product. This is just a personal sound level preference thing for this car.

I will contact Allen's to see what they recommend. Going to rear outlets in not an option. Have heard about installing resonators or glasspacks ahead of the muffler body, but I have no idea on specifics of how to do it. Would be interested in hearing more ideas.

Thanks

That's the way it was meant to be, especially on a big block! I love it and the neighbors do as well, especially at 5am when leaving to a show. It's music to my ears......

There should be different glasspacks out there to choose from. I noticed a noise reduction when I switched to Royal Purple...

I would check with a local exhaust shop and see if they can tuck some type of small diameter glass pack/muffler in line or under the covers. I know that the Shelbys have a small Flowmaster that goes between the headers and the rocker cover to keep noise down(a little).

When I had a SBC in my 68 (69 sidepipes), I added a couple short glasspacks between the manifold and sidepipe.
When I dropped in the LS2 motor, I went with these and left off the short glasspacks.

I'm not sure if it's the new mufflers or the LS motor, but they're a lot quieter than the old setup.

I know, it was just that the quaking of my neighbors' walls and shattering of their windows got old after a while...

Thanks to everyone for the ideas and comments. The Car Chemistry collector idea and Vortex cone ideas are particularly intriguing. Based on what you sent, it looks like they are designed for use with headers. Is it possible to install them on a stock side pipe /manifold set up? I'd like to try and keep the pipes looking stock, and this may be a way.

Thanks again.

all you do is slide the cone inside the pipe so as long as you have a few inches or pipe at a joint where you can slide in the cone and weld it is your set.
