I shipped it to the Sandblasters on friday and they blasted monday and today in the morning.
The frame was picked up by the Powdercoating company in the afternoon and here the story ends so far! (I was in various business meetings in the UK and could not keep track of the progress)
My frame should have been powdercoated twice - first time with thermozinc powder - then with the color powder.
It will come out FLAME-RED !!!
When I return from the UK I will pick it up on friday morning - I´m already anxious about it!!!
Don´t ask of the cost: around 750 $ converted to US currency.(incl. blasting!)
But I think it´s worth it - and that counts!!!
I'm planning to go with a dark solid purple on my frame, similar to the Prowler purple but a shade or two darker. I haven't looked into what type of paint to use. In the late 70's early 80's some custom painted frames were shot with an immeron type paint, not sure what it actually is, never sprayed it, but always heard that it was extremely durable and chip resistant.
Also, if your custom painting a frame, you'll probably want to clean up welds and possibly use a little filler here and there and I don't think powder coating works on metal with fillers. Need to verify that though.
I've got the body off the frame and now in the process cleaning it up. I'm guessing that you would need to paint the suspension parts seperate, and same with powder coating.
I have gotten quotes here in MS about blasting and powdercoating the frame of mine. So far blasting is going to be $75-$100 and powdercoating is going to be in the neighborhood of $300. I was going to go with standard black but I kind of like the idea of gray. I'll have to mull that one over for a while. :D :D
dladd74roadster, that soundsd like a fair price to me. but what about your suspension components, such as trailing arms. Do you plan on powder coating them also.
Did mine with POR-15 and really like the stuff!
Do follow the usage instructions, though - it hardens with air moisture.
I removed old paint, loose rust etc.with a power wire brush, then removed grease etc. with Marine Clean. For the removal of remaining rust I used Cream-Ex, a rust remover containig phosporous-something-acid (really works - use rubber gloves or it will give your skin a rash very quickly), then Marine Clean again - you want something that works really well, otherwise the POR is not going to stick on well.
I can only find Cream-Ex at the following URL: http://www.korrosionsschutz-depot.de - this is a German mail order place specializing in corrosion protection. EMail me separately (cun_zoeller@gmx.de) and I'll be happy to send you a translation of what they say or get you the stuff.
