It's always interesting to me to see things that have broken on these cars of ours. I'll start with a "lucky break":



A few years back I was cruising and had sudden onset of a loud ticking from the engine bay. Called a friend and got towed home, checked plugs, and had a fouled plug on #4 cylinder. I pulled the passenger side valve cover and noted that the #4 exhaust valve was...gone! When I pulled the head, I found this valve mashed up into the combustion chamber. Incredibly, there was only a tiny, superficial ding in the piston that you had to look close even to see! Not a scratch anywhere to be seen on the cylinder sidewall. Somehow the keeper failed and the valve dropped, was driven up into the combustion chamber and bent impressively on the first stroke, wedged in, and stayed there. the ticking was from the piston contacting the curled up edge of the valve. I had the valve, spring, rocker, and keeper replaced, and drove it for another 4 years until I finally had the whole beast rebuilt! A combination of very good luck and a durable forged piston saved me from a potential disaster.

That's not healthy....

Here is a circuit board from a 77. Bottom right was power for the clock that got crushed into the light circuit and the oil pressure connector twisted as well. Keep those fuses in and not over-rated...

A little loose in the back end. A bit of a pull on the brakes. Spring cushions had passed their best-before date. No washers. The caliper pin was MIA. Spring bolt was upside down....

The half shaft wins (just amazing!) but this is what I found rattling around when I pulled my pan and (no $hit) caused the full rebuild:

This sound and then a locked up motor will cause your heart to skip a beat when you are going about 90 mph I just stabbed in the clutch and put the tranny out of gear. Then coasted about a 1/2 mile to the off ramp and down into a business parking lot. $4300 dollars in parts repair job later it was reborn as a 434 small block. Caused by using a cheap 4340 forged lightweight 4 inch stroker crank shaft in my 427 small block and the bubba that balanced it cut corners and drilled 4 balancing holes in one throw.

The clip holding the clutch fork on the ball stud also broke. I limped home by starting the car in gear several times, when I couldn't run the stop lights. No big deal, but it did give me the excuse I needed to pull the engine and begin the restoration.

While not as bad as some of the other breakage here, having this ear broken on the diff cover for about 10 years bothered me.

This used to be the AC compressor on my 78’. Not as spectacular as an engine kaboom, but destruction just the same.
