Default Carb/distributor questions

This may turn into a long winded post, so apologies for that. Please keep in mind that I am new to this and learning as I go. MY '81 has a rough idle when in gear (auto). It seems to be low, not quite to the point where it wants to die, but close enough to make you think it is. In park or neutral, its OK. The carb on it is older, so no computer. Due to several 'bubba' fixes, my solution was to buy the correct carb. I did this and had it rebuilt and just finally got the new choke on. My mechanic though, told me the carb is still missing parts. He tried showing me where, but I don't recall at this point. He also told me the computer isn't very good and if plugs break, they're expensive to replace, so he recommended keeping the carb I have and putting in a GM HEI distributor and ditch the computer system all together. My understanding from the way he described it is while the computer isn't controlling the carb anymore, it has some control over the distributor and that may be the reason its off. However, it has been my thought that the computer only had control over the carb. Further more, when I got home and popped the hood, I was reminded that I have an Accel HEI distributor. Is there a difference between these two? I have no problem ditching the computer; I drive this car as a DD and simply want to start easier on a cold start and idle right. Yes, I have adjusted the idle/mixture screws, but it just doesn't seem to come out right. The idea that it too needs to be rebuilt has also occurred to me. Pictures are below and if there is something you want clarified, just ask and I'll do my best. Thanks in advance for your help.
