Default Inconsistent hot starts for newbie owner

Newbie here, just bought a very clean 1977 blue/silver vette w/94 k on the clock. Car is gorgeous inside and out but has been driven only about 500 miles in the last 5 yrs.,lots of sitting around! After 2 cans of Seafoam the car runs well, starts good cold (70f)after 1 or 2 pumps but on hot starts sometimes its instantaneous and some times it needs some gas while cranking. I have tried pumping once or twice but I get inconsistant starts no matter what! Sometimes I get a good puff of blue/black smoke sometimes not. A local carb shop wants to rebuild the stock carb and tune it for $450.00 A couple of C3 guys at the local cruise tonite said my car starts as well as most and I may not see any improvement and recommended theirr own personal tuners. What do the experts say???

Welcome to the forum and the world of Corvettes.
Two pumps when cold sound just about right.
When restarting your Vette "Hot" try depressing the gas pedal just slightly, about 1/4 of an inch, no need to flood it when HOT. Post back how that works.

Had same problem with a 73 that sat forever. Would get flooded like that when hot and crank forever Mechanic advised doing what you did and driving it some more

Thanks very much Petes I will try that and get back to you all, it seems to still be improving as I drive it more!

If your carb. needs to be rebuilt and you do not want to try it yourself, I would contact Forum member Lars. He is The carb. Guru here. My '77 L82 also exibits the same behavior. Starts fine when cold but seems to flood while sitting after being driven. The longer it sits after driving the better it starts. The hotter the temp. of the coolant and ambient the bigger problem it has. I am going to refresh my Qjet soon and this is one of the issues I want to cure if poss.. Good luck, mike...

Mine does not seem to flood when hot, just the opposite, I need to add gas, but I bet the 1/4" throttle suggestion is going to help!

OK I'm getting more consistent starts and less smoke w/ the 1/4" throttle method for hot starts, thanks PETES and all of you.

Seems like you are on the right track. One or two pumps cold, 1/4 on warm start. Put a few miles on and "blow it out" for a few days, put some fresh gas in it. These are not fuel injected so you need to find what you engine needs. You might want to take a half hour to pull the plugs, set gap and log what each plug looks like. May help you identify a potential problem with a ring or valve.
Welcome to the forum! Good luck.
