Default could a person use...

could a person use a auto tranny as kind of a load on a engine,

ie for running outside of car, if so what all would you need to do this?

u mean to run on a test stand?? i would imagine that it wouldnt cause to much of a load seeing as the internals of the trans would be moving but no transfer after that. i dont think it would make a huge difference ... i think

A buddy of mine used to own an engine shop with an engine dyno.

To my surprise, the engine dyno was just an engine run stand with the "dyno" being something that looked like a torque convertor. But this thing was basically a water wheel. Water was pumped in one section and pumped out another side. The water pressure is what placed the load....and the pressure could be regulated.

Yes, you can use the torque converter and front pump section with a locked clutch section of an auto tranny to induce a load on an engine on a run stand - that's what a waterbrake does on a dyno. However, on a dyno, the waterbrake is fed from a large water reservoir which is intercooled to remove some of the heat induced by the braking process: All of the engine's power is converted into heat energy when the brake is applied, so the water gets hot - fast. An auto tranny used as an engine brake will work... for a very short time. It will heat up fast, allowing one - or maybe two - quick loaded pulls before it will overheat. I've seen it done using a PowerGlide, and it got hot fast...

An automatic is not such a good idea for a dyno. When I was in college they had a dyno with a tired 305. A local junkyard donated a Powerglide for us to use because the old 3-speed manual was dead. We had trouble making it stay in high gear and it heated up fast even with a massive water to oil cooler.
