Default Factory Auxiliary Cooling Fan-1979

My car does not have this option (see diagram below). I presume because it does not have A/C. Nevertheless it seems like a good idea. I do know that the temp sensor is in place between the back two cylinders on the passenger side. I can feel the male connectors.

I guess the basic question is: What was this fan designed to do? I have been fortunate not to experience over-heating problems even in July. Was the fan for high-heat, A/C load, slow traffic conditions? Has anyone ever seen one of these units? How do they fit on? I am contemplating installing it if I can find one in a salvage yard. If none can be found, will aftermarket units do the same job attached to the stock sensor and wiring?

They are switched on by the temperature sensor mounted on the right
side of the engine. Are not switched on when the A/C is turned on.
On cars originally equiped with this fan, there is a trap door on the
bottom of the radiator shroud which opens to let more air in. The
fan is mounted to a bracket with three arms which bolt to the shroud.
Fan is standard on A/C, L82 1979's and L82 1980's.

Paul;
The aux fan was only used on L82's with A/C. My car has one. It is designed to come on at 238 degrees. I have never seen my temp get even close to 200 degrees so I don't think mine has ever come on. It mounts to the fan shroud on the engine side of the radiator.
My daughter has my camera right now. When I get it back I will take a picture and send it to you.

Thanks Guys. My car has never seen much more than 210 - July on the highway - so I guess this is non-starter for me. There are other places to spend money ;) .

Paul, I have one for sale at this time.

"This is a real nice '78-82 L-82 auxillary cooling fan ready to bolt in to your radiator shroud. Drill the three holes in the factory marked areas and bolt it in. $75.00 shipped lower 48. "

I may be wrong and I think it has been discussed here before, that not all L-82's had the trap door in the fan shroud. This is optional in my opinion. JIM

Thanks JIM

Jim,
Appreciate that. I do not know if I have a trap-door or not. What does it look like? Will check tomorrow late. Do you have the wiring harness to go with it?

Mine has the fain. It was like a "Eureka" moment when I looked in there and saw -- much to my surprise -- an electric fan!

It already saved my butt at least once, before I learned I had a weak fan clutch. And yes, in South Texas we are well into peak cooling (and yes, A/C) weather.

Just to rub it in, we'll be taking out the JetSkis tomorrow....

I did not install this fan in my car. My Vette is a L-48. I purchased this off of a low mile L-82 car and stored it years ago. I am not familiar with exactly how it works with the switching. However there is a wire running from the fan that plugs in on the right hand side of my engine compartment. How it actuates I don't know. I assumed it was turned on by the A/C and or a temp.switch that was also in the line.

Anyway, This fan works good and I no longer need it.$75.00 shipped as stated. JIM
