Default Starter Solenoid need the big spring? Also wiring pictures anyone?

Bought a new starter solenoid and in the box it came with a gigantic spring.

When I took my old one off it didn't have the spring. So i'm wondering if I should use it or if it was for other applications?

and i'm thinking I could use a little help with a photo of the wiring.
I might be able to figure it out from how the old lines lay and from my wiring diagram but a photo would always come in handy!

There should be a spring that pushes the bendix away from the flywheel when you let off key from the start position. It goes between solenoid and the solenoid core that fits into the solenoid. Will try to get a pic. You can just see the spring by the dude's left thumb. mike...

Here's a few photos. I'm guessing that the spring goes inside the solenoid and around the thing still left on the car. ...

But there wasn't one that came off the car so that is why i'm confused.

And as far as I could find there wasn't much info in the manual about the solenoid.

maybe it fell when I took it off and didn't hear/notice it....

Would it have still worked without it?

I have never seen a starter without one but I have not seen everything. It should have been installed. Look around, may be on the floor somewhere. The spring goes around the steel core in your fourth pic. and rest in the recess of the solenoid in your third pic. Pic. of the wiring on my '77. mike...

Parts left out cost nothing and pose no service problems. If it's there, it's there for a good reason.
Use the spring.

I feel like I have an extra black wire that goes to the starter itself?

The black wire may be a ground for the wiper/blower motor and goes to a starter or bell housing bolt.

Spring should be used.
unless you want to drag your starter pinion gear and chew it up.
Black wire is most likely the Wiper Gnd.
be sure you wire correctly or you will fry your wiper motor and more.

The way I'm reading your wires.
black line goes to the ground for the wipers-this goes to a bellhousing bolt or starter mount bolt
yellow line wire should go to the R term
purple should go to S term
red goes to large stud on solenoid along with pos battery cable

yeah. That was about how I was thinking.

Walmart didn't have the correct spade bits for the red/purple so i'll have to wait to get them at the hardware store tomorrow.

I but/broke them off since the bolts were so rusted I couldn't get to them.

BUT from what I remember the bigger red one was on the inside? Which would have been the S terminal....

The one with the purple line should be a purple wire and goes to the clutch switch-you might want to make sure in case someone has done some funny wiring.

The wire with the yellow line should go to the pos post of the coil-again confirm so we don't smoke something due to funny wiring
(you said in your previous post this wire was the purple - mistake ?)

I could have them mixed up since Bubba has done quite a few things already to this car it's hard to tell.

I just remember the larger of the two was on the inside...=S
and If i'm correct that wire was red....

Not really sure what color the the tiny wire actually is. I thought I saw something in the wiring diagram about a purple wire so I just subtracted all the wires I knew I had.

But all in all maybe even what I remember could be wrong so i'll definitely double check tomorrow.
The coil wire should be easy to pick out and confirm.

Got some spade bits today and started hooking it up....after powder coating a few of the parts last night.

I went ahead and hooked it up like it should be and not how I think I remembered how it came off.....

But as far as this extra ground is concerned???????
I was going to put it at the starter terminal but saw marks from the old lock washer on the shield so I'm pretty positive it doesn't go there now.

Which only leaves the bolt going into the block....but again i'm pretty sure I didn't take that bolt off until the other day...which means that wire doesn't go there either...

so now what?
