Does a ZZ383 fit under a stock hood?
Has anybody installed a GMPP ZZ383 into a C3 (mine is an 80) with the stock air cleaner assembly & the stock hood? I've been told because of the higher ports on the "fast burn" ZZ383 heads all intake manifolds are a minimum of .5'' taller than stock. My desire is to use the stock air cleaner assy. for a stock look. Has anybody done a similar installation? Is there a low profile intake that will fit with the stock air cleaner & the stock hood? Thanks in advance.

The ZZ383 uses Vortec style heads, so it does require a different intake manifold than the one that came on your '80, but an Edelbrock performer or something similar should fit, even though it will be taller than the stocker. You may need a drop base air cleaner, but nothing drastic.

I'm wanting to use the stock air cleaner for a "stock" look. I have purchesed an Edelbrock perormer...but I'm having hood clearence issues. I was hoping to hear from somebody who has actually done this install. Thanks

Isn't the ZZ383 just a stroked ZZ4 (350 cu inches)? The ZZ4 fits under the stock hood of my 68.
I bought a drop base Morosco air clearner, it cost $30. It's spun aluminum. I used the bottom base lid and used the top stock steel air cleaner lid. The air cleaner looks stock. You have to bend down and look closely that it's not. I used the intake manifold that came with the ZZ4. BTW, there's enough room between the wiper motor and the air cleaner lid to fit a HEI distributor.

I have brodix heads on my zz383 block..demon carb. You want to have room so your air filter can get up off the engine, and be 3"+ . To do that, I changed to a 4" L-88 hood, and stopped worrying about limiting the performance ect. The zz383 needs optimal breathing .
Otherwise yes you could stuff it in and may not know the difference?

for what its worth- just dropped a ZZ4 crate into my 80 model. was a complete motor with a drop base air cleaner, has 1/2 inch clearance to hood bottom. cant give info on the zz383, do your homework... mine is anything but stock looking, but it WILL haul azz!///////

The stock air cleaner design does not allow for much other than the stock intake, I don't think. With the vortec heads on the ZZ383, that's pretty well out of the question. I'm not sure if there is a manifold out there with a lower profile than a Performer, but there may be a creative solution to make it work.

What about the Weiand airstrike? Low profile outpowers the performer by a good margin. I would think they would make one for Vortec heads
