About 1 in 10 times I try to start my 1982 vette, it just goes dead, no crank at all. Also the gauges go to 0 or even the temp goes to high. If i disconnet the battery, and try again sometimes it works sometimes I have to disconnect and reconnect several times before it can get it to crank and start. Once it start runs great.. Any ideas...Jeff
Maybe need new battery cables? Happened to me once so I ruled the battery out since I knew it at least at 12+v.
Make sure your posts are clean and power is running through the cables to your starter. I don't go anywhere without a multimeter to check just that sort of thing. :>
I did change the cables 6 month ago. This doesn't seem like a low volatage, problem, there is some kind of switch/relay/thinggy going off. As I am turning the key, NORMALLY the a/c fan kicks on and you can hear the fuel pump prime. When THIS happens all electrical goes off, and the tech goes below zero. no other responce...just dead
Was thinking of changing out the ECM. MIght this solve it??
your symptoms indicate poor connections, either positive or Gnd.
sometimes on the starter solenoid there is a large copper washer internal,
this makes contact to actually start, the starter motor,
after years of service these become arced and less conductive, creating a dead spot or no start problem.
simple test try and start nothing ,... now retry only this time smack the starter with a hammer when you try and start,
if that works you need to replace / or flip over the solenoid starter washer.
it was a connection problem, when i replaced the battery cables i installed a battery cut off switch, and it had cooroded. All fixed now, ust in time the nice Texas weather...
