i have a 76. i do not like the chrome valve covers that are on the car now so i am looking to replace them. i think i want to do custom paint job on them. so here is my question are the valve covers for 76 different from other c3 years or can i get any from that era? also are they specific to corvettes or will any mid 70s 350 cover be the same? im thinking steel ones would be the best way to go rather then try and paint over chrome any suggestions would be great. thank you.
The L-48 had a normal Chevy V8 w/ painted valve covers so you can get painted from others in the era incl. for ex. Camaro.
Many would trade 2 sets if they had 2 sets of painted for chrome.
Yes, best to get painted rather than paint chrome. You could put in your profile where you are.
My 79 has factory valve covers that I might be willing to swap with you. I don't know how much shipping would be from Florida to Michigian. If your interested I can send you pics.
Clean them up real good with lacquer thinner (inside and out) and let them sit for 15 minutes or so. Find an old 4 slot metal toaster (that your wife won't kill you for ruining). Spray paint it with wrinkle black (or they come in colors now) and set it on top of the toaster that you have the handles wired down on. Leave it sit on the toaster until fully wrinkled.
P.S. Don't do this indoors or on your deck just to be safe. Do it on a nice windless day on cement. And remember, it will be hot.
