At certain rpms engine vibration causes the metal horn plate on the steering wheel to rattle against the column. I was just going to put a small piece of felt or similar to prevent metal on metal contact, but I figure I'd first ask if this is something common with a known fix, like tightening a screw somewhere?
If assembled properly with the correct parts it should not rattle. I suggest an inspection with the replacement of the parts needed.
An AIM would be of great help.
Is the horn activating when the button makes contact with the steering wheel spokes?
The horn works when you push it hard, but it doesn't sound when it rattles, the noise is just from the metal button clacking against the steering column.

Here's a page from the 74 aim, I changed all the top parts and it still rattles so I just stuffed a piece of paper towel in between.
Thanks for the info. I now have the Haynes manual. I popped the horn button off, and I see that the piece it attaches to is held in place by three plastic pins. It looks to me like only one of those pins is intact, and the other two may have popped off. It might be as designed, but it sure seems that if all three were secured like the one is that the rattle would be gone. Would anybody else mind popping their horn button to see what theirs looks like underneath? I'm wondering if I can get replacement pins, or if I'm looking at the wrong thing.
