Default Opinions on a 502 with electric fuel pump

I have an opportunity to pick up a ZZ502 at a great price. Engine should be great in my '69 so no worries about that. Only issue is that it doesn't have the mechanical fuel pump boss, so I'd have no choice but to use an electric fuel pump.

Anyone see any issues or have any opinions? Good, bad....

Thanks!

Every car on the street since the mid 80's is using an electric fuel pump. You should have no problems. Install a good filter at the same time.

I've had a zz502 in my '69 for 4 years. Get a good electric pump and it'll be fine.

How do you like the engine? Would you do it again or differently?

The engine is great. All the power you need and it's relatively mild and very streetable. If I ever have to rebuild it I would swap in a 1/4" stroker crank to make it 540 CID and a slightly bigger cam since it seems to run out of steam around 5500 rpm.

BTW, I'm using the '69 small block radiator and it never goes above 190*.

One more thing to note, you will need to get an adapter for the clutch stud boss if you have a manual transmission.

Scoggin-Dickey makes one specific to the corvette.

You should consider pulling your cam and having it reground. I've had a few done on ZZ502 cores by Delta Cams in Tacoma, WA. .610 lift and 238* duration on the intake and .607 lift and 244* on the exhaust. It really wakes the ZZ502 up! It's one Benjamin and you don't need to change anything else.

I knew I needed to check for the boss, but if it's there, can't the hole be drilled and tapped for the clutch stud?

You will need a low pressure fuel pump or a fuel pressure regulator to get pressure under 7 psi

Vettes have a unique location for the clutch pivot ball. The boss isn't even cast into the gen 5/6 blocks. The one you refer to is used in F, G bodies and trucks.

I use Mallory 140 electric's on everything. Nice being able to fill the carb bowls before hitting the starter, and running things out on shut down with a dash switch. Go for it, as you'll like the set up a lot.

Not sure what you were planning to use but this kit from Weldon is a great value and their customer service is just fantastic.
I have their kit in my car.

I've used the Aeromotive A1000 pump for years on my 555. Works great...reliable on cross country highway trips.

JIM

PS- I vote for a cam change too. ZZ502's run out of steam way too early due to the mega weenie cam. Everything else is good on them.

Does anybody install an "inertia" or "accident" shutoff switch when converting to an electric pump? Just askin'.

I'm planning on wiring mine into an oil pressure switch with momentary push button as an override to prime the carb.

It's higher end stuff for sure but if you knew about Weldon you wouldn't have posted a repy like that.

What's to know? I'm guessing they sell a lot of stuff to the government.
