The original carburetor on the 1972 Vette was shot so I bought an Edelbrock model 1406 carb which seemed to be taller than the original. I had to use an adapter for it to fit my engine block which made it sit another inch higher. So now I got like an inch maybe two inches from the top of the carb to the hood.
Anyone have any suggestions for a low profile air cleaner? I really don't feel like spending the money on a different carb.
Well, if you're not into spending money, your best bet probably would have been to rebuild the original carb, but as they say, shoulda, woulda, coulda, right? Let's deal with the situation as it stands.
I have been looking into low profile air cleaners, because I want to install a carb spacer, and here is what I have found. It is advertized as sitting 2.563" above the flange where the air cleaner sits on the carb, and it about the lowest I have found without spending a whole buncha cash.

You can use a different carb adapter, there is just a plate version that will work just fine and only rise the carb .090 instead of the inch you have now. As for the air cleaner a drop base model works but you do have to take a ball pen hammer to it and reshape it some around your electric choke if you have one.
Nope, I was a Soldier, I just happen to be aware of the proper way to address a Marine if you don't know his/her rank. I speak a little Marine, not fluently, but enough to get by.
I know these air cleaners are hated on this site.
But other cars use them all the time, its not going to catch on fire on my car because my timing is perfect and my carb is new so without wasting every waking moment day after day wondering what air cleaner to run I choose this one and am done with it.
If conscience bothers a person buy a replacement filter every year for $10.
It's hard to see how you could do better than the stock air cleaner base
Will it not fit your carb somehow?
I wish it would fit. I also have an Edlebrock 1406. I bought a stock drop base and tired but it does not even come close to fitting. The electric choke gets in the way. I tried various spacer but a no go.
I recommend that the OP use the Edlebrock drop base #1221. I also needed to use a 1/2 spacer but was able to fit a 3 inch air cleaner under a stock hood. Also must use the thin adapter plate.

Well, they are about the lowest of the low profile air cleaners, ran one on my Roadrunner years ago, never had a problem for a couple of years, then one day it caught on fire. Burned out pretty fast and didn't spread, but was still scary. It's better than no air cleaner at all, I'll say that much. The filter element is pretty flimsy, I would clean or replace it frequently.
Tim, you gotta do something about that master cylinder and vacuum booster, seriously. The rest of the engine compartment looks so nice they stick out like a turd in a punchbowl.
Keep the shiny side up!

I got done what I could before low temps hit and i don't have heat in the garage so now i will tackle the firewall and get 1 of those after market heater boxes next also.
I am now past battling tires and rims last week and pulled out the back window today for the summer.
if you used a 1" adapter under the carb and to use a dropped base air cleaner you have to get I believe Edel's 3/4" plastic air cleaner adapter so the base clears the choke, now you are really running out of room, if you go with a flat base a.c. you still have the same problem but without the plastic spacer, what options do you have left, rebuild the Q-jet, buy a holley spread bore which I had one on my 69-l-36 and didn't like the Q-J ran better,to use the new Edel. carb you have get the adapter that Manual spoke of along with the 3/4"plastic a.c. spacer, change to a sq. bore intake manifold with plastic a.c. spacer, Vette's can get to be a PIA, which ever way you go, to check top of a.c. to hood clearance go to toy store and get some Silly Puddy make 5 one inch ***** and place one on the stud, rest around the outside top a.c., gently close the hood, open the hood and measure their thickness.
