Fan belt length question
I pulled the valve covers for repaint and new gaskets this weekend, and had a hard time removing the belt from the alternator (generator). I think the belt is too short, I had to remove both the upper bolt and the lower pivot bolt and twist the alternator slightly to get the belt off. In the picture below the alternator is adjusted for good belt tension. As you can see, there is no room in the slot to push it forward and remove the belt.
Where along the slot in the upper bracket does the alternator usually stop when the belt is properly adjusted? And what belt length gets it there? I plan to replace the harmonic balancer soon and want to swap in the correct alternator belt at that time.

If you think the belt is too short, take it to NAPA and have the salesperson measure it (or read the number on the belt), then NAPA can provide you with a longer one - the numbering code on the belt gives the length.
The problem with looking at standards for belt length on these old cars is, who knows what has been changed on the car waterpump pulley, crank/damper pulley, etc. You can also use a piece of small rope to measure the desired length/distance you are looking for and NAPA, or other car parts shop, can provide a replacement.
