Default Codes on calipers?

Just changing out the calipers on the '69, put on rebuilts. I was getting ready to box up the cores when it occured to me that maybe I might want to hold on to the old original calipers 'cause maybe that's one of those date coded parts that go for a kajillion bucks on ebay, and who knows when the "matching numbers" bug might get me. Anybody know if that's so, or should I just send 'em in and get the cash?

JB,

The caliper halves do carry casting numbers and date codes, but to be honest there aren't a whole lot of people checking numbers on calipers yet... Even at NCRS and Bloomington Gold judged events.

I get the impression from your post that you've already invested in a set of replacement calipers for your car. While correct casting number/dated cores aren't bringing the "big bucks" (and probably won't in the near future), they are definitely worth a few bucks to somebody. If they were mine (and were original to the car), I'd keep them and have them rebuilt at a later date if I wanted to go the NCRS or Bloomington Gold route... They're not hurting anything by staying in storage at this point.

If you don't have a set of stainless sleeved calipers already, you can have YOUR calipers sleeved and returned to you. Most of the reputable vendors will do this for you at no charge... You just have to inform them about it up front.

Finally, if you really don't see yourself using these calipers in the future and you are considering sending them back for the core charge, then drop me an e-mail... If they are 1969 castings, I can do a little better than what the caliper vendors will give you.

Regards,

Thanks, RR. Do you have any idea how I could tell if these are actually the original '69 calipers? I suspect they are because the car's pretty low milage, but I don't know it for a fact. Is there some list of the appropriate codes I could consult?

JB,

Delco Moraine supplied three different sets of caliper castings during the years that this caliper design was used...

1965-Early 1967
5465954 (front, inner)
5465952 (front, outer)
5465902 (rear. inner)
5465905 (rear, outer)

Late 1967-Early 1972
5452270 (front, inner)
5452273 (front, outer)
5452281 (rear, inner)
5452284 (rear, outer)

Late 1972-1982
5473795 (front, inner)
5473796 (front, outer)
5473806 (rear, inner)
5473807 (rear, outer)

There are some subtle differences between these calipers, but nothing that can be seen once the caliper is painted and installed, so about the only way to identify them is by the casting numbers.

There is currently some conjecture on just what date codes actually appeared on the calipers. At this point I'm not sure that I'd be willing to state with any certainty as to what the factory actually did, so I'll leave it at that.

If you have the correct casting numbers on your calipers, I guarantee you that you're probably ahead of most of the guys out there... Even those with Top Flight and Gold Certified cars.

Very nice car by the way JB... A big block convertible (with air if I remember correctly) is a very desirable combination. Looks like you picked up a real winner!
