Default Borgeson Vs rack and pinion

I am less than a month out from going home from my deployment and I want to upgrade the steering on my 76 when I get home. My big debate right now is do I go with an updated rack and pinion set up or do I just upgrade the steering box? I am a fan of manual steering (partially to deter my wife from driving the vette ) but I also just like the feel of non assisted steering. I have read the advantages of both but would like some opinions of others, so lets hear it!

First off, thanks for your service to our country.
I did the Borgeson and could not be happier. I have never driven a C3 w R&P steering, so maybe not a fair assesment. The Borgeson unit bolts right up, fits by my headers and looks like it could have come from the factory w/ this steering box. No regrets. I put the P/S on mine so my wife could drive it. Second thinkin' that one now after your suggestion. Haha. Good luck and safe trip back home.

Thanks for the paycheck! I am more leaning towards the Borgeson right now due to the cost and the ease of installation but still like the idea of rack and pinion.

I too put my Borgeson conversion on a few months ago. Love it. My installation was was complicated due to my side mount headers. Otherwise, stock exhaust or standard headers would have simplified the instal. I've never driven an R&P car so I can't say but the Borgeson product works great!

Thx for serving our country!

i am glad you are home ward bound, thks....you can get non power racks......the problem with the old style steering is the idler arm and drag link set up its just old technology with more moving parts than necesary

A beeg HAWAIIAN MAHALO's (thanks) for service to our great country and it's citizen's....
Another vote for the Borgeson box.Steering response is great and is a bolt on mod.If your set on a manual R&P Flaming River has one for Vette's but it seemed to be a pain to install and didn't fit right. If you search here you'll find the write up on it. Here's a few pics of my Borgeson box install.
Cleans up things under the car no more leaky control valve and hoses.

Does anyone know the price difference between a Borgeson and just having the box blueprinted by GR? I'm at that point in the frame buildup on my 73....

Consider the cost of a new control valve & hoses also.Even with a rebuilt box you still have to deal with that control valve.Borgeson box eliminates it.Nothing wrong with the stock system as long as it's top shape.I just got tired of dealing with leaks and sloppy steering.Weighed all the options from forum reviews and decided the Borgeson Box was a wise choice.

The emphasis here is on one's definition of "pretty much." A Borgeson box is $459 and is a true bolt-in and can be fitted in an hour or two. Sure, you have to buy a few other parts depending on whether the car has manual or power steer, but the whole job can be done in half a day so you can be driving the car within hours of starting the job and have a written three year factory warranty to protect you.

And to the OP, thanks for your service to your country and for helping to protect Australian servicemen and women in that area.

Regards from Down Under.

I've read those threads on the install of the jeep box and it seems they are bolted up with a bracket. The Borgeson box is engineered to fit the C3 frame directly no brackets needed. The pitman arm on the jeep box needs a special arm that some have said does not fit right. The Borgeson box is machined to fit our pitman arm.Yes you pay more for the Borgeson Box but it fits better and you'll have less problems on the install.Your choice but I would recommend the Borgeson over the Jeep box. They look similar but do not fit the same.....

this 'jeep' box uses the same three holes in the frame, I've been actually researching this , not just reading about it ...somewhere

I am one of those people who usually go for the cheaper version and make it work. I have a little fabrication skills and actually built an Old CJ rockcrawler. So, I have a ton of jeep stuff around and have a Grand Cherokee box I was going to mod to fit. But, after I read all the posts, looked up the correct pitman arm, got the steel to make the necessary modifications...blah blah. I got the borgeson and I am so happy I did. Everything bolted right up and fits great. I run hydroboost brakes too and the whole kit made it a snap.
