Default How to tell if HEI distrib. is computer controlled?

81, crate engine replaced by PO about 6 years ago, trying to determine what type of distributor I have, and whether it is comtrolled by the ECM or not.

It's not the greatest picture, but it does show the distributor.

What I would like to do is check the timing and tune it. Not that I know how to do this, but I would like to learn. But first I need to know what I'm dealing with.

From what I have read, the 81 came with the HEI dizzy and was the first year for the ECM. Being that the engine was replaced, I'm not sure what I have. If it is ECM controlled dizzy, then it is not adjustable except for initial advance.

Thanks for any help!
Jim

Its got vacuum so looks like the old style to me.

Also under the cap look at the Control module. 4pin vs 7pin. 7 being computer controlled.

Also I don't see that many wires going to the carb/intake, so chances are they tossed out the factory Carb and Dist and put on the older style.

all '81s and '82s, and California emission equipped 1980 305's were computer controlled.

I will check that. And yes the carb is an Edelbrock.

OK, so assuming for the moment it is NOT computer controlled, and is an HEI distributor, then how do you, or can you adjust or tune the centrifugal advance.

Thanks guys
