Default Delco Remy Distributor 1112050 7M18

I need some help. I have a 1971 and I am trying to find a matching numbers distributor for it. I found one that is a Delco Remy 1112050 which would be correct for my 71 350/270hp. However, the date code is 7M18. Can someone decifier this date code for me. From what I can tell the:

7 = year (would that be 1977? Maybe this was a replacement)
M = December
18 = 18th day of December

The person selling it believes it is the original distributor but the 7 is confusing me. My car was built in Jan 1971 so if that 7 = 1970 I would be good with this one. If he is mistaken and the 7 is actually a 1 then that would be December 1971 and therefore it would have been a replacement or for a 1972.

Please help set me straight. I'm tired of trying to google different phrases to try and find why it would start with a 7 in the date code.

Hi JBG,
My mid-January built 71 has a band with 0M16 on it. It's the origial.
Could the one you're looking at be so early that it's a 67 date?
I don't believe the distributor itself was dated, just the identification band.
You should be looking for a distributor body that has a hole drilled in it for the 'thrust button' which will identify the body as being produced for a car after the mid 70 model year.
You can buy a band with Delco Remy, the part number, and the date, on it. The reproduction bands are slightly different than the originals, but not too bad.
Regards,
Alan

PS: If you're concerned about the band, check the cap info too; if that's part of the package.
PSS: I was still thinking about your band and the 67 doesn't ake any sense either because the 67 part number would be different.So?

Alan,

Thanks for the reply. I agree, I do not think it is a 67 as I think this was only made for the 71-72 corvette (could be wrong). But to start with a 7, it makes me think that maybe it was a replacement distrubuor manufactured in 1977. The distributor is complete and was pulled from a running 1971 350 (so says the owner). He claims it is the original but I do not think he is the original owner so he would not know if it was replaced with a factory replacement before he got it.

My 71 runs great now but the tach does not work. I need to pull the cable and check the tach drive gear. The guy I bought it from said he replaced the distributor but didn't keep the old one. He claims the tach worked before his but he didn't have a gear for the replacement distributor. I thought for the $100 this guy was asking for a complete working tach with good gears, that I would buy it if the numbers were right. But since they don't match up, I may just check and see what gear I need to get the tach working.
