I was after the 4 loose bolts to stop the vibration in the column at speed in my 76. Getting it all back together and after inserting the c clip the telescoping shaft is now locked. If I take the clip back out it is free, put the c clip back and it is locked again. Anyone run into this before? Any suggestions? I believe I put it all back together the way it came apart but I'm getting older and memory not what it used to be. Any ideas...Jim?
Also looking for a schematic of how it all goes together, AIM only has from locking plate, up.
That C clip has a grove on one side, I noticed it on the third, fourth time I re-assembled mine. I think I enlarged a C. A. view from their catalog, 68 - 75 as 76 wasn't shown. Was not easy, went real slow, however all functions are now working.
Thanks Jim,
When I apply the spring compressor as in the pic you posted the shaft just comes out, I can pull it completely out in fact. Did I assemble it wrong?
You need to insert a headless screw in place of the star bolt... this will push the locking rod downward and allow you to compress the spring. You'll see the old home made version I've been using for years below in the pic (G2)
AHHHH, very clever Willcox, wish I saw that early this morning. I used some other Yankee ingenuity and got it after fighting with it for way too long, I might add. Thanks also to Jim for the pic, very helpful. My problem was I had the shaft bottomed out so the c clip did not catch on the flat spot on the shaft, therefore pinching it. I pulled the shaft out 1/2 inch and reinstalled the clip and it worked. Spent way too many hours on it but I learned how to do it!
Thanks again, this forum is worth its weight in gold!!!
