how to remove painted bolts?
my 81 was painted before I got it although I don't know exactly when, I have had it for 5 years. The job was really good extending to the fender lip that the hood covers including the bolt that holds the bottom of the hood prop. I want to remove the prop, but am afraid if I turn the bolt, the paint will crack around the bolt and then spread.
Will it? is there a good way to remove a painted over bolt and not damage paint?
thanks

Hi dbj,
I think 76's advice is good.
You might consider putting a small (unobtrusive) washer under the bolt head when you re-install the bolt. That may help hide the shape of the cut in the paint, and also prevent, (hopefully), the head of the bolt cracking the paint as you tighten it.

Alan

Hi dbj,
For some reason I didn't see your picture when I first replied.
I believe that originally that bolt, washer, and plate were unpainted (probably cad or zinc plated).
If you want, you could remove the bolt and washer, but leave the plate in place since moving it will leave a rectangular scar in the gutter of the hood surround.
Then, remove the paint from the bolt and washer, spray some clear on them to stop them from rusting, and replace them.
I think it'll look nice that way.

Alan
