Default 1976 Fuel Pump

I think that I need to change the fuel pump on my 1976 L-48. It looks like an easy job...the hard part seems to be how to get at it? Is it easier to remove the ac compressor and access it from up top or try to get at it from below?

From below is easier. You must remove the lines and if the front of the car is up and back is down you have less of a chance of siphoning gas from the tank when you remove the 3/8 rubber hose. I normally drop the fuel in the tank to below 1/4 tank. Raise the front up and place on stands. You can clamp the 3/8 rubber hose to be safe. This is most important to prevent safety issues. GAS WILL FLOW FROM THE LARGE RUBBER HOSE IF LEVEL IN TANK IS NOT DROPPED, FRONT IS NOT RAISED OR HOSE CLAMPED OFF. Then the next problem is that the fuel pump push rod will drop and rest against the fuel pump mounting plate. A thick grease applied to the rod will hold it up or some use a bolt with a sharpened end threaded into the old front motor mount bolt hole that lines up with the fuel pump push rod. Other members will have more suggestions. Be safe and good luck with it. mike...

only thing i can add is that i use a long extension and go in through the wheel well....take serioulsy the siphon action of the fuel lines or it will ruin your day.

Good suggestion about going through the wheel well. I will try that when I put it back together.

I took it off tonight. It is ready to go back together. Hopefully that will go smooth.
