Question for the trany guys, my muncie m-20 was really hard to get into first and third gears. The unit was rebuilt with new parts and is a 71 heavy duty case. I was told that it just needs to have some miles on it and it will get better. Is this BS or do I have some problems. I have checked under the car and the linkage seems to be working allright, not hitting anything. Also we tested the trany on the engine before putting it in the car and It worked ok. Thanks for the input.
Generally "hard" shifting comes from either a clutch thats not fully releasing or "weak" synchros. I'm assuming you/they changed the synchros when the unit was rebuilt. Also assume the clutch adjustment has been verified. Questions: Is it always hard to get it into 1st & 3rd, even setting still? (bad linkage, mechanical questions inside). Do you have to "wait" when you shift into these gears, but then after the wait it goes in OK? (clutch a bit to loose, or weak synchros, or too heavy a clutch plate [if you updated the clutch]). Does the car "pull/drift" forward even with the clutch fully depressed? (clutch too loose.)
I notice this with my "old" tranny when I get too lazy to press the clutch in all the way.
One strange possibility I've heard of is the transmission is not correctly aligned with the engine. This leads to the input shaft rubbing on the crankshaft so the tranny is always being driven by the engine. It's like you're trying to shift without a clutch. A bad/misaligned pilot bushing will do the same thing.
If you want a litte work, disconnect the drive shaft and see how much "force" is coming through the transmission with the clutch depressed. Shouldn't be much if any at all. It's hard enough for the synchros to handle the inertia of the clutch plate during shifting. Any other real force will be a problem.
Did you update the clutch plate to a heavy duty unit?
Andy, We went with a new centeforce 2 clutch and plate and new throwout bearing. It is always hard going to first, even sitting still. I only have about 10 miles on the car, because of carb problems, have not driven it much.
