Tach has problem, doesnt work, but randomly jumps up to about half way then back down
I just bought my first Corvette... a 1977 Black Corvette Coupe.
The tach doesn't work.
Although sometimes when turning on headlights, or clicking turn signal it will jump to about half way around on the tach but then slowly goes back done to 0. This happens during idling, as well as revved up.
To make things worse, I pulled dash part way our yesterday to see if it had a weak ground or anything, and I couldn't find anything.. I was a bit confused after i pulled it so I just put it back in. But after I put it back in, now the instrument lights dont work when headlights are turned on. fyi, i had also just replace the headlight switch last week, and they were working... Please help.
Thanks...

It definitely sounds like a bad ground to me, or some wires are crossed somewhere. I doubt it's the tach filter, but that's easy enough to bypass. (check Willcox's website)

I checked on Wilcox site but I cant tell how to check the tach filter? I'm not even sure what it looks like to check it... It is so frustrating on these cards as the dash is so hard to get behind too... Anyone have any ideas on where I might find an instruction on it...
fyi, i already ordered the aim manual, but it wont be here for a few days...

The first page shows how to bypass it in an illustration (disconnect the plug where it connects to the filter and connect it directly to the tach post on the distributor). Usually they're mounted to a standoff on the intake manifold, near the distributor.

i tried it... it does the same thing... any other ideas? Also that now the dash lights dont work...
I also realized, when you pull out the headlight switch half way and full way it acts the same... even at half way the headlights are on. If i'm correct i thought when pulled half way, only the marker lights etc are supposed to come on but not the headlights?

This tach filter that you all speak of...What exactly is it's purpose????
I've had my car completely apart and never seen one on my car, yet my tach works fine. I'm confused as to what it does.
