I checked my timing today for the first time in 4 years just to see what it was. The sticker on the bottom side of the hood says it should be at 6*. I had the engine idling at about 500 and the large plug disconnected from the distributor. The timing was at a constant 10*, is this Ok or should I try and get it at 6* like the sticker says. The car runs good and starts right up so I never thought to check it before.
Thanks for any help.
i installed a new cam a couple of weeks ago . i now have the distributor set at 10 degrees advanced ,was set at 6. car runs good with more advance. as long as you dont have any pinging or have any starting problems your okay.
If it doesn't ping and you don't need to pass emissions then leave it alone. Also for the '81 the speed of the engine doesn't matter for setting the timing. Once you unplug the distributor connector you have no advance.
I don't know much about engines so I had a guy come over to check out my '71. He advanced it to 36*. He said that is the optimum for performance with the base 350.
It runs fine.
